Job summary

Mortenson is seeking a Project Buyer II to support the Power Delivery Operating Group. Focus on building supplier relationships, managing procurement activities, and ensuring timely delivery of materials and equipment for substations, wind collection, and transmission lines.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of procurement experience.
  • Ability to handle multiple procurement activities with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Knowledge of construction processes, equipment, and materials, purchasing processes, and procedures.
  • Negotiating, organizing, planning, verbal, and communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and analytical skills.
  • Active listening and effective communication including openness to diverse input.
  • Software experience.
  • Current driver's license.

  • Lead procurement strategy development with project teams to align supply chain with goals and schedules.
  • Plan material needs early to secure long-lead items.
  • Solicit bids, analyze quotations, and select suppliers based on cost and schedule.
  • Ensure buyouts align with budgets and manage procurement risks and compliance.
  • Interpret technical specs and confirm supplier compliance.
  • Lead risk mitigation planning for critical equipment and long-lead materials.
  • Draft and execute purchase agreements and coordinate with Risk on surety requirements.
  • Lead supplier calls to monitor performance and maintain partnerships.
  • Track orders from placement through delivery and report status to teams.
  • Conduct quarterly job site and supplier visits to strengthen relationships.
  • Drive supplier performance improvements and risk mitigation.
  • Work effectively with diverse backgrounds and levels.

Job description

SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking a Project Buyer II to support the Power Delivery Operating Group. This role focuses on building supplier relationships, managing procurement activities, and ensuring timely delivery of materials and equipment for the construction of substations, wind collection systems, and transmission lines.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Purchase equipment and materials at the best value while meeting quality, quantity, and specification requirements (e.g., transmission line steel, substation steel, high and medium voltage electrical equipment, enclosures, MV cable).
  • Lead procurement strategy development for assigned projects by collaborating with project, estimating, and design phase teams to align supply chain strategies with project goals and schedules.
  • Plan material needs early in the projects design phase to secure long-lead and critical-path items.
  • Solicit bids, analyze quotations, and select suppliers based on cost and schedule competitiveness.
  • Ensure buyouts align with budgets and manage procurement risks and compliance.
  • Interpret technical specifications and confirm supplier compliance.
  • Lead risk mitigation planning for critical equipment and long-lead materials.
  • Draft and execute purchase agreements and coordinate with Risk team on surety requirements.
  • Lead supplier calls to monitor performance, resolve issues, and maintain strong partnerships.
  • Track orders from placement through delivery and communicate status to project teams.
  • Conduct quarterly job site and supplier visits to strengthen relationships.
  • Drives supplier performance improvements and risk mitigation.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in business, supply chain management, construction management or related discipline, or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience
  • 5+ years of procurement experience
  • Ability to handle multiple procurement activities simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and timeliness
  • Knowledge of construction processes, equipment, and/or materials, purchasing processes, and procedures
  • Negotiating, organizing, planning, verbal, and communication skills
  • Strong customer service and analytical skills
  • Active listening skills and effective communication including openness to diverse input and feedback
  • Software experience
  • Current driver's license

The base pay range for this role

is $76,200 - $114,300 (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan.
