Job summary

DLA Architects in Itasca, IL seeks an experienced Project Architect with 8–15+ years of architectural experience, including 5+ years as a technical project architect, to lead complex educational projects from concept through construction administration.

You will coordinate design, documentation, and technical coordination with multiple disciplines, guide client meetings, and manage teams to ensure schedule, budget, and code compliance. Hybrid schedule offered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture required or equivalent.
  • Licensed Architect preferred but not required.
  • Educational project experience in the US strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Project Architect with 8–15+ years of architectural experience, including 5+ years as a technical project architect and substantial experience in educational architecture (K-12 or higher education), to join our growing team in Itasca, IL. This is a client-focused leadership role for a professional who thrives on guiding project teams, engaging stakeholders, and solving complex technical challenges from concept through construction administration.

You will help shape learning environments that support student success, reflect community priorities, and stand the test of time, while leading complex projects from documentation through construction administration.

Candidate Expectations

In this role, we will be looking for the following skills:

Project Leadership
  • Lead the project from the conceptual design phase through construction administration.
  • Coordinate project teams, consultants, and client representatives.
  • Ensure projects stay on schedule, within budget, and meet quality standards.
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and design workshops.
Design & Documentation
  • Develop design concepts into detailed construction documents.
  • Prepare and review construction documents and specifications for accuracy, completeness, and code compliance.
  • Ensure designs align with the client’s educational vision and operational needs.
  • Incorporate sustainable design principles and educational best practices.
Technical Coordination
  • Coordinate structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, and specialty consultants.
  • Resolve technical conflicts between disciplines.
  • Perform quality control reviews throughout each project phase.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, ADA accessibility standards, fire/life safety requirements, and educational facility guidelines.
Construction Administration
  • Attend Construction Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) Meetings
  • Review shop drawings, product submittals, and RFIs.
  • Conduct site visits to observe construction progress.
  • Assist in resolving field issues and responding to contractor questions.
  • Review change orders and help maintain project documentation.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture
  • Licensed Architect (preferred but not required)
  • 8–15+ years of architectural experience, including 5+ years as a technical project architect
  • Proven ability to produce complete construction document sets with a strong understanding of building codes, standards, and construction methods
  • Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with experience managing client and contractor relationships
  • Proficiency in Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook)
  • Educational project experience strongly preferred; applicants must submit work samples demonstrating US experience relevant to the responsibilities outlined above

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation: $80K–$120K annually, based on experience and qualifications.
