Bart & Associates, Inc. is seeking a Project Accountant to support our Finance & Accounting Department. The candidate may work in McLean, VA; Huntsville, AL; or Tampa, FL.

The role requires setting up project accounts, maintaining documentation, approving invoices and time sheets, and reporting on project profitability and variances. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Proven experience as a Project Accountant or in a similar role.

  • Grant access to project accounts for authorized personnel and ensure security in financial management.
  • Authorize transfer of expenses into/out of project accounts as needed.
  • Review and approve supplier invoices related to projects for accuracy and contract compliance.
  • Review and approve time sheets for project-related work to ensure proper labor cost allocation.
  • Review and approve overhead charges applied to projects and ensure correct cost allocation.
  • Regularly review project account totals for assets and expenses to maintain accuracy.
  • Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management.

Job Type: Full‑time

Job Summary

B&A is looking for a Project Accountant to support our Finance & Accounting Department. The candidate may work in one of the following offices: Huntsville, AL; McLean, VA; or Tampa, FL.

Responsibilities
  • Set up project accounts in the accounting system to track financial transactions accurately.
  • Keep detailed records of project‑related documents, including contracts, change orders, and other pertinent information.
  • Grant access to project accounts for authorized personnel, ensuring security and accuracy in financial management.
  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project‑related accounts as needed.
  • Review and approve supplier invoices related to projects, ensuring accuracy and compliance with contracts.
  • Review and approve time sheets for work related to projects to ensure accurate labor cost allocation.
  • Review and approve overhead charges applied to projects, ensuring correct allocation of costs.
  • Regularly review account totals related to project assets and expenses to maintain financial accuracy.
  • Investigate project variances and submit detailed variance reports to management, identifying and explaining discrepancies.
  • Collaborate with receivables staff to address unpaid contract billings and ensure timely collection.
  • Report on project profitability to management, highlighting financial performance and trends.
  • Identify and report any opportunities for additional billings to management, maximizing project revenue.
  • Provide management with reports regarding the remaining funding available for projects, ensuring informed decision‑making.
  • Create or approve all project‑related billings to customers, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Investigate all project expenses not billed to customers, ensuring all costs are accounted for and billed appropriately.
  • Respond promptly to customer requests for more detail, providing clear and accurate financial information.
  • Approve the write‑off of any project‑related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Close out project accounts upon completion, ensuring all financial transactions are finalized and documented.
  • Prepare and submit government reports and tax returns related to projects, ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Compile necessary information for internal and external auditors, providing accurate and comprehensive financial data as required.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • 2–5 years of relevant work experience.
Required Skills
  • Proven experience as a Project Accountant or in a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desired Skills
  • CPA or CMA certification.
  • Experience with project accounting in the construction or engineering industry.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems.
  • Familiarity with inventory management.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience in preparing government reports and tax returns related to projects.
