Job summary

Hardsuit Labs is seeking a Programmer III to join its Programming team. You will design and implement extensions to existing systems and pivotal new systems, collaborating with Programmers, Designers, Artists and Producers on the project.

With 5+ years of professional software development and 2+ years of Unreal Engine experience, you will work in a remote setup across Canada, applying strong C++ skills and contributing to large code bases while aligning with studio standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain features across AI, UI, Physics, Character, Graphics, Engine and Tools subsystems.
  • Design and maintain robust, optimized systems meeting design, technical and schedule requirements.
  • Collaborate with QA and leadership to ensure stability and address defects.
  • Author, review and provide feedback on technical and end-user documentation.
  • Collaborate with Technical Leadership to establish overall design and architecture.
  • Work with minimal guidance on medium-impact tasks or independently on low-risk tasks.
  • Provide guidance to junior staff.
  • Help team members set up tools and troubleshoot workflow blockers.

Job Description

As a member of our studio's Programming Team, you will work closely with Programmers, Designers, Artists and Producers on the project. You will design and implement extensions to existing systems and pivotal new systems to address the needs of our team of content developers and external third‑party partners.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop and maintain features across various subsystems, such as AI, UI, Physics, Character, Graphics, Engine and Tools
  • Design, author, and maintain robust and highly optimized systems that meet all design, technical and schedule requirements.
  • Work closely with QA and technical leadership to ensure the stability and accuracy of systems by identifying, communicating and resolving defects.
  • Author, review and provide feedback on technical and end‑user documentation of systems.
  • Collaborate with Technical Leadership and other Programmers to help establish overall technical design and architecture.
  • Work with minimal guidance on medium‑impact tasks or independently on low‑risk tasks.
  • Provide guidance and informal supervision to more junior staff.
  • Help team members set up tools and troubleshoot minor tools issues and workflow blockers.
What You’ll Bring
  • 5+ years professional software development
  • 2+ years professional Unreal Engine experience
  • 2+ years developing in a team environment
  • Strong C++ knowledge
  • Extensive experience working in at least one large code base
  • Ability to openly discuss and review technical proposals, requirements, designs, algorithms, source code, and reference documents with programmers, content creators, and managers
  • Ability to provide meaningful time estimates for medium‑sized tasks
  • Ability to take a large body of work and break it up into actionable sub‑tasks
  • Proficiency in identifying areas that could use optimization
  • Extensive experience using debugging tools to fix bugs in unfamiliar code
  • Interest or experience in using AI‑assisted software development workflows, to support activities such as code exploration, implementation, debugging, documentation, and code review
  • Strict adherence to project coding standards
  • Strong cross‑discipline collaboration skills
  • Willingness to receive and act upon feedback
  • Great communication, written and verbal
  • Experience or comfort with client‑facing communication and the ability to represent the studio professionally when interacting with external partners
  • Expert knowledge in 3D math
Nice to Have
  • AAA experience
  • While Unreal is our primary focus, experience with Unity or proprietary custom engines is a strong plus
  • Experience developing on console
  • At least one shipped title
