Job summary

SPX Technologies in Madison, AL is seeking a skilled CNC Programmer to join our sheet metal fabrication team. You will create and modify CNC programs, read 3D CAD models and blueprints, and optimize feeds and speeds to improve productivity.

The role requires at least 3 years of programming experience, ability to interpret GD&T, and a hands-on approach to safety and quality. You will train operators, collaborate with engineers, and contribute to on-time production.

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Manufacturing Services, the Programmer’s primary responsibility is to program computer numerical control (CNC) equipment used in sheet metal fabrication processes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of industry concepts, practices, and procedures, and will rely on extensive experience and sound judgment to plan and achieve production goals. This role may also include overseeing and directing the work of other team members involved in CNC.

What You Can Expect In This Role (Job Responsibilities)

  • Training and Development:
  • Training new machinist operators.
  • Create instructions and setup sheets for operators.
  • Write programs and modify existing ones for increased efficiency.
  • Participate in educational opportunities; read technical publications.
  • Technical and Programming:
  • Create and modify CNC programs for various machining operations using CAD/CAM software.
  • Review and interpret 3D CAD Models and blueprints to determine machining processes.
  • Make calculations for programming, tooling, and material required.
  • Analyze job orders and perform necessary calculations.
  • Analyze and select feeds and speeds for programs.
  • Make improvements to complex setups and for inefficient programs.
  • Simplify tooling selection for operators and increase productivity for the team.
  • Determine the sequence of operations in a program.
  • Quality Assurance:
  • Perform quality checks to ensure precision in machining, products meet specifications and make necessary adjustments.
  • Collaborate with operators and supervisors to resolve programming and fabrication issues.
  • Assess complex machine or program faults and quickly determine effective solutions.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Comply with all company safety rules and regulations.
  • Documentation and Communication:
  • Maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Communicate and collaborate with engineers, machinists, and other team members to optimize production processes.
  • Document actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Accomplish organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 3 years Production Programmer (Machine Shop) Experience
  • Basic math, reading and writing skills
  • Ability to create programs in G and M codes

  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions
  • Understanding of conceptual skills, process improvement, verbal communication, functional and technical skills, controls and instrumentation, supply management, tooling, inventory control, judgment and attention to detail

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of CNC programmable equipment
  • Strong knowledge of metal fabrication
  • Ability to create programs using NC Express
  • Ability to learn required computer programs
  • Ability to handle large volume of work and perform multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
  • Previous work experience on manual mills and lathes
  • Ability to work in a team environment to achieve common goals
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Requires Safe Work Habits
Physical Requirements
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Remain standing on feet for long periods of time
  • Occasional carrying, grasping, reaching, pulling, pulling, stooping for parts and supplies
Education & Certifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
Working Environment, Schedule and Travel
  • Normal work hours (5 - 8 hour days: Mon – Fri)
  • Must be flexible to work overtime as required, including occasional evenings or weekends.
