Job Summary

The Department of Biostatistics invites applications for a Programmer in the National Studies on Air Pollution and Health group. The role reports to Principal Research Scientist Dr. Danielle Braun and focuses on developing, deploying, and maintaining data processing pipelines for clinical, administrative, and environmental datasets.

Job‑Specific Responsibilities
  • Assist with development and deployment of data cleaning, data processing pipelines, data management, and variable creation protocols for electronic health records, administrative claims data, environmental exposure data, and other complex databases using GitHub.
  • Maintain databases using R, Python, and SQL in collaboration with the research team.
  • Create and link customized databases and analytic datasets in UNIX environments.
  • Develop and document software in R, Python, and SQL.
  • Act as a resource for the Senior Programmer to debug code and access correct data.
  • Use HPC computing clusters and collaborate with IT to resolve cluster‑related issues.
  • Develop and refactor code for modular data processing pipelines, utilizing workflow languages and configuration managers.
  • Perform data exploration to prepare datasets for environmental health research.
  • Build deployable data products using containers for pipelines and dashboards.
  • Support data cataloging via JSON‑based metadata schemas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This position has a one‑year term with the possibility of extension.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit work samples (sample code) and/or complete a coding assessment.

Basic Qualifications
  • 2+ years post‑secondary experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Professional experience with R, Python, SQL, GitHub, and related software.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Informatics, or a related health‑data field; a Master’s is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of maintaining and supporting HPC cluster infrastructure.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, and strong time‑management skills.
  • Organized with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience collaborating with all levels of a research team; demonstrated teamwork.
  • Service‑oriented mindset and approach.
  • Experience with version control for team development.
  • Awareness of and aptitude to respect cultural and identity‑based differences in group settings.
  • Commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Skills related to fostering an inclusive environment, effective intercultural engagement, and personal humility and authenticity.

Additional Information
  • Appointment End Date: One year from date of hire, with the possibility of extension.
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week.
