Job description

Perimeter Behavioral of Dallas is one of the premier behavioral health hospitals providing inpatient psychiatric treatment for children and teenagers, as well as senior adults. Perimeter is seeking a Program Therapist to perform complex social, therapeutic, and psychosocial intake services for incarcerated individuals through our diversion program. This position is designed to provide the appropriate level of care through clinical screenings, assessments, advocacy, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for a diverse range of mental health issues faced by the population, from serious mental illness to the natural struggles that accompany incarceration.

Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Services for Perimeter Behavioral Hospital of Dallas, the Program Therapist will provide quality therapeutic mental health care to incarcerated individuals who need and/or want services. This position is responsible for providing assessment and counseling services to inmates in the diversion program.

Role and Responsibilities:
  1. Conducts mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, assessments, and follow-up care.
  2. Determines and coordinates disposition of patients for appropriate level of mental health care.
  3. Coordinates with re-entry clinicians for appropriate discharge planning services.
  4. Completes required statistical reports.
  5. Collaborates with the Department of Corrections to ensure access to patients, proper housing, and treatment disposition.
  6. Coordinates patient care with other institutional programs.
  7. Develops and leads group treatment on mental health observation units and other units as assigned.
  8. Participates in mental health and medical rounds as assigned.
  9. Participates in case conferences and treatment planning for patients receiving and being considered for mental health treatment.

Additional responsibilities include providing psychiatric diagnostic evaluations within the county jail, building therapeutic relationships, case coordination, attending pretrial hearings, assisting court staff, maintaining client rosters, and ensuring confidentiality and proper documentation in accordance with HIPAA and agency policies.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including effective listening, complex issue explanation, and report writing.
  • Ability to counsel offenders effectively, assess and resolve problems, and motivate through pro-social behaviors.
  • Advocacy skills and ability to communicate assertively in court settings.
  • Commitment to empowering clients with compassion and maintaining high standards.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices, community resources, and the criminal justice system.
  • Ability to work with clients with multi-needs, including mental illness, chemical dependency, and chronic illnesses.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in social work, Counseling, or related mental health field.
  • Licensure such as LCSW, LMSW, LPC, LPC-Intern, LMFT, or LMFT-A.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a psychiatric healthcare facility with direct therapy, crisis intervention, and assessment skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; ability to prioritize and multi-task.
