This position is located in the Office of Outreach and Engagement, Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service | Smithsonian Affiliations (SITES | Affiliations). As the Smithsonian’s national outreach and engagement arm, SITES | Affiliations extends the Institution’s reach beyond Washington, DC, connecting communities nationwide with Smithsonian collections, stories, scholars, and resources. Through traveling exhibitions, partnerships, and collaborative initiatives, SITES | Affiliations enables millions of people to experience the Smithsonian in their local communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Program Specialist (National Engagement) plays a key role in advancing Smithsonian Affiliations' national engagement efforts by supporting partnerships, coordinating outreach activities, and fostering relationships with Smithsonian Affiliates and external stakeholders. The position contributes to the development and implementation of initiatives that strengthen community engagement and expand public access to Smithsonian resources and opportunities.

• Engage with museums and cultural organizations across the country to develop and implement national programming, convenings, professional development, student programs, educational experiences, etc.
• Oversee the Leadership for Change internship program in partnership with internal and external partners and university students nationally.
• Collaborate with Smithsonian museums and units, supporting, connecting and leveraging national work across the Smithsonian.
• Work closely with Affiliates and other partners to understand local needs and priorities, and to help active Smithsonian resources to support community- and capacity-building.
• Build and maintain relationships with state partners in support of the Museum on Main Street program.
• Coordinate, produce, and distribute informational materials concerning the activities of the programs to the public, museums, scholarly organizations, and Congress.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must possess three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in program administration, project management, operations, grants management, museum administration, cultural programming, or a related field. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge of national networks of museums and cultural organizations that facilitate shared learning and resource exchange.

Knowledge of public and educational program design and implementation for museums and other cultural organizations, including internships, speaker events, convenings, workshops, professional development programs, and similar initiatives.

Experience establishing, documenting, facilitating, and expanding collaborations among museums and cultural organizations, particularly those that are national and/or international in scope.

Knowledge of exhibition, educational program, and object-loan development principles, including content planning, design, and implementation.

Experience with cross-organizational project management methods, including long-range planning, milestone development, resource coordination, and risk assessment.

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in museum studies, education, public administration, communications, nonprofit management, history, arts administration, cultural studies, business administration, or a related field.

Education completed outside the United States, must be deemed equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. Institutions by an organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.
