Job summary

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego is seeking a Program Specialist for after-school sites. You will coordinate enrichment programs like STEM, arts, and leadership, support staff, and ensure students have a safe, engaging experience.

You’ll monitor program effectiveness, supervise youth, and help implement culturally relevant activities while coordinating with school partners and volunteers to deliver high-quality outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 with a HS diploma or GED; associates preferred.
  • 48 college units or CAPE required; or equivalent knowledge/experience.
  • Two years’ experience working with school-aged youth.
  • Ability to plan, instruct, coach and lead varied activities.
  • Capable of maintaining a positive learning environment.

DEPARTMENT/PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD or Clubs) CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable, and fun environment. BGCGSD’s mission is to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic success, build good character and responsible citizenship, and make healthy lifestyle choices. We have provided a safe, fun, and positive environment at our sites with trained and dedicated professional staff. Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based on our three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Character Development, and Healthy Lifestyles.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under the direct supervision of the Site Supervisor, Program Specialists will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing specific enrichment and specialty programs within the after-school program at ASES Middle School Sites. This role focuses on providing targeted support to afterschool staff, ensuring that specialty programs (such as STEM, arts, financial literacy, leadership, etc.) run smoothly, are engaging, and are aligned with the school’s broader educational objectives. The Program Specialist will work closely with the afterschool program staff, monitor program effectiveness, and ensure that all students receive a positive and enriching experience.

1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises members in program area; continually monitor and supervise the safety and behavior of members; maintaining a safe, positive atmosphere; implement discipline techniques and classroom management.
  • Demonstrates positive values and ethical behavior through program quality and appearance of the Club at all times.
  • Research, plan and lead organized learning activities for students to develop and strengthen their academic, physical, and social skills.
  • Participates as an active, positive team member with supervisor, other staff, volunteers and members at all times by communicating effectively.
  • Develop culturally relevant daily lesson plans and activities.
  • As needed, differentiate lessons and activities so they are appropriate to students with various abilities.
  • Coordinates assigned program services and cooperative learning activities for youth that are both fun and instructional. Participate in and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events.
  • Promotes and stimulates program participation. Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Responsible for daily set-up and clean-up of all materials used during the program.
  • Ensures equipment is in good condition, with safety precautions posted (where needed) and members instructed in proper and safe use of equipment.
  • Maintains accurate program attendance records and submits them in a timely manner.
  • Assess facility needs and perform janitorial duties or manual labor as needed – mopping, cleaning tables, trash removal, painting, playing games, moving equipment, etc.
  • Displays a high level of enthusiasm and commitment for activities.
  • Perform various administrative tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
2. SAFETY & WELLNESS
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all youth, staff, and visitors by consistently enforcing safety protocols and organizational policies.
  • Be proactive in identifying and reporting any safety concerns or maintenance requirements to ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
  • Participate in safety drills and contribute to ongoing risk assessment and emergency preparedness efforts.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of Club safety and wellness policies and procedures across the Club.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED required/Associates Preferred
  • A minimum of 48 units of college curriculum or completion of the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) required; or a combination of knowledge and experience.
  • Two (2) years’ experience working directly with school-aged youth and knowledge of youth development required.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement quality programs for youth; instruct, coach and direct varied activities.
  • Skill to implement and supervise a positive learning environment, incorporating academics, enrichment and recreation; motivate and engage youth and manage behavioral challenges with peer mediation.
  • Possess skills for instruction, direction and guidance, with the ability to lead and control groups of children in various recreational and educational activities and settings.
  • Respond according to procedure for emergency and disciplinary situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with youth, parents, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Must have the ability to be active and on your feet for a minimum of five hours each day and complete other essential functions of the position and other duties as assigned.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check
  • Maintains compliance with the organization's drug-free workplace policy
  • Occasional weekend and evenings in support of fundraising events, committee meetings and activities.
  • Clear TB test as required by the school district.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification.
  • Comply with COVID protocols.
  • 48 College units or pass a test administered by the district.
  • Submission of high school diploma or college transcript
