Job description

The client is seeking a Program Officer to develop and manage programs aligned with its grants and program goals, while identifying issues and opportunities in the public humanities that advance the client’s mission. The role also supports equitable practices within the organization by serving as a strategic facilitator for incorporating and sustaining equity-focused approaches across program work.

In collaboration with the client’s President & CEO and program staff, the Program Officer will help develop programmatic goals and strategies, identify new opportunities for programming, and focus on grantmaking and/or operating program activities. Responsibilities typically include program research and development, grant review processes, program activities and delivery mechanisms, partnership support, and assistance with monitoring and evaluation of projects and programs. The role may also involve management and implementation of specific documentary and grant programs, providing guidance to applicants and grantees, conducting outreach and representation at events, and building knowledge of relevant policy and research developments through review and participation in meetings and conferences.

The Program Officer will develop and monitor program budgets and timelines in coordination with program, executive, and finance stakeholders, and may support training and evaluation of program support staff, including co-supervision of a Program Assistant. Additional responsibilities include contracting for and overseeing program-related consultants as needed, developing informational materials and presentations for the board and attending board program committee and full board meetings when required, and coordinating with staff on organization-wide efforts such as compliance and annual or biennial reporting. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the humanities and an understanding of the intersections with justice, equity, and community well-being, along with 3–5 years of experience in grants and/or program management in a nonprofit setting (preferably a cultural organization), strong relationship and communication skills, attention to detail and problem-solving, and comfort working with office and database tools; a bachelor’s degree in the humanities or related field is preferred.
