Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory seeks an experienced Materials Scientist, Materials Engineer, or Metallurgist at the Ph.D. or M.Sc. level to join our MSM team.

The role emphasizes physical metallurgy, materials properties, certification, and advanced manufacturing, with AI and ICME as assets, on a 9x80 schedule in Idaho Falls. You will lead qualification and certification programs for armed services, manage multi-disciplinary teams, and pursue funded proposals.

Qualifications

  • PhD or MSc in Materials Science/Engineering or related field with significant post-degree experience.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams and defense-focused programs.
  • Ability to obtain DoE Q clearance; US Citizenship required.
  • Experience with materials qualification/certification (MIL-STD, AMS, ISO, ASTM).
  • Proven track record managing programs with $20M+ budgets.
  • Excellent written and oral communication with government/military stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a qualification and certification program for armed services operations and industrial base manufacturing.
  • Oversee materials performance, development, and manufacturing process development for high-strength alloys.
  • Integrate AI, digital engineering, ICME, modeling and simulation into materials systems.
  • Write proposals, secure funding, and guide teams through qualification milestones.
