Reporting to the Director for the Gender Equity Center (GenEC), the Program Coordinator supports the center’s mission by managing daily operations, creating a welcoming environment, and assisting in the coordination, implementation, and assessment of programs and services that promote education, leadership, support, student success, professional development, and engagement activities for students, with a focus on addressing issues regarding gender.

Under the supervision of the Director, the Program Coordinator serves as a key point of contact for students, staff, and community members, supporting outreach, events, and program/campus initiatives. The Program Coordinator trains, supervises, and evaluates student undergraduate and graduate student assistants, empowering them to lead projects and achieve desired outcomes. By collaborating with campus and community partners and contributing to assessment and operational efficiency, the Program Coordinator helps ensure the GenEC remains a vital resource for fostering inclusion, creating safety for all Spartans, and student success.

The Program Coordinator will ensure an affirming space within the center that values and promotes an appreciation for the diverse student communities at SJSU.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement programs and workshops that support and promote education, advising, leadership, professional development, and academic success for students—specifically addressing gender issues.
  • Identify and address barriers to retention and graduation by creating specialized initiatives that meet student needs.
  • Support the implementation of education, leadership, and co-curricular activities and programs such as the South Bay Conference on Gender, Lunch & Learns, Domestic Violence & Intimate Partner Violence Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Women’s History Month.
  • Collaborate with campus departments, organizations, and community partners on events and programs that examine student gender experiences from an intersectional lens.
  • Stay informed and be familiar with institutional policies and procedures related to program and event planning.
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop and deliver high-impact programs in relation to student success.
  • Assist the Director with developing learning outcomes for the center’s programs and creating assessments to evaluate the programming.
  • Maintain records and summary reports of center programming, activities, and events to be submitted monthly.
  • Ensure student assistants create and provide a welcoming space for all.
  • Manage student assistants to work collaboratively on programs, events, and projects.
  • Supervise, guide, and coach student staff leaders in their social, leadership, academic, and identity development; support and advocate for students’ holistic well-being.
  • Lead outreach and retention efforts through tabling at campus and community events.
  • Build and maintain relationships with gender-focused affinity groups, including student, staff, faculty, alum, and community organizations.
  • Participate in campus gender equity initiatives such as serving on university committees.
  • Assist with development, deployment, and management of marketing and publicity materials for events and campaigns, including flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms.
  • Write, edit, and manage content of the center website.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of how gender issues impact individuals and society.
  • Ability to produce culturally appropriate educational events, programs, and projects from conception to execution.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects while following safety and confidentiality protocols.
  • Knowledge of software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and drawing/illustration.
  • Ability to prepare operation manuals, procedures, program and activity schedules, and budget reports.
  • General knowledge of Title IX and its application at SJSU.
  • Knowledge of assessment techniques and ability to develop cohesive reports.
  • Ability to promote, organize, and facilitate group meetings.
  • Provide student assistants with guidance and direction to accomplish tasks.
  • Facilitate a collaborative environment.
  • Apply judgment, discretion, and maintain confidentiality in performing complex tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
  • Work in a social justice-oriented organization.
  • Acquire a working knowledge of the center and its partnerships quickly.
  • Support students, staff, and faculty through a variety of situations and make appropriate referrals to campus and community agencies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Reason logically and analyze data to provide written and verbal presentations.
  • Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Keep supervisor informed about goal progress and relevant campus partner initiatives.
  • Recommend initiatives and changes to improve quality of services and programs.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies, and others in committee work and student advising.
  • Work some evenings and weekends.
  • Communicate with constituents professionally and respectfully.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, with upper-division or graduate coursework in counseling, interviewing, and conflict resolution when job-related.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may substitute one year of experience. A doctorate and appropriate internship or clinical training may substitute the three years for positions with major counseling responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Gender Studies, Behavioral Sciences, Public Health, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Experience developing and implementing educational programs, workshops, or retention initiatives that support historically underrepresented students and address gender-related issues.
  • Two years of program coordination experience in a college setting.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in higher education.
  • Experience hiring, training, and supervising college student staff.
Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional III. Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,540/month. CSU Salary Range: $5,540/month – $7,893/month. SJSU offers a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
