Job summary

Van Buren ISD's Bert Goens Learning Center is seeking a Program Assistant (SXI Classroom) to support instructional staff in delivering individualized education programs. You will work with students with significant disabilities, following teacher instructions and ensuring data is collected on progress toward IEP goals.

The role requires patience, reliability, and strong teamwork, with responsibilities including assisting with personal care, maintaining records, and attending after-hours learning

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Associate degree or completion of 60 college credits preferred.
• Two years of experience as a program assistant or similar training preferred.
• Ability to follow instructional plans and teacher direction.
• Knowledge of positive behavior supports and de-escalation strategies.

Responsibilities

• Follow teacher directions and written lesson plans for group and one-on-one programming.
• Assist in monitoring and maintaining records of student progress toward objectives.
• Assist students with personal needs (toileting, dressing, etc.).
• Consult and communicate effectively with others.
• Deliver students to appropriate locations on time for programming or bus.
• Demonstrate classroom management and positive behavior support strategies.
• Prepare and organize instructional materials to support daily programming.
• Support data collection and maintenance of records related to progress toward IEP goals.
• Assist students with personal care needs while maintaining dignity and privacy.
• Attend evening and after-school activities related to the Learning Center program.
• Participate in staff meetings and maintain reliable attendance.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and parent information.
• Adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
• Complete tasks within established timelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Learning Center Principal.
• Valid driver's license required.

Job Description

Job Goal(s):

The overall job goal of the Resource Room Program Assistant is to work with the classroom teacher in carrying out the instructional program for each student in the assigned class.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

High School diploma required

Associates degree or completion of two years’ college equal to 60 semester hours is preferred.

Work Experience :

Two years’ experience as a program assistant or specialized training (CPI/TCI) preferred.

Skills :

• Ability to demonstrate patience, compassion, flexibility, and respect when working with students with significant disabilities
• Knowledge of positive behavior supports, behavior management, and de-escalation strategies.
• Ability to follow instructional plans, teacher direction, and individualized student programming.
• Ability to assist with medical, personal care, and daily living needs.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to collect data, follow procedures, and support student progress toward IEP goals.
• Ability to maintain a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment while responding to changing student needs.

Essential Job Functions

• Demonstrate care, compassion, and respect in all interactions with students, families, and staff.

• Assist in monitoring and maintaining records (educational or medical) of student’s progress toward objectives.
• Assist students with personal needs (i.e., toileting, dressing, etc.).

• Demonstrate effective classroom management and positive behavior support strategies.
• Assist with classroom preparation, organization, and instructional materials to support daily programming.
• Support the collection and maintenance of data and records related to student progress toward IEP goals and instructional objectives.
• Assist students with personal care needs, including but not limited to toileting, dressing, feeding, hygiene, and mobility, while maintaining student dignity and privacy.
• Attend all evening and after school activities as they pertain to the Learning Center program.
• Participate in staff meetings.
• Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality.
• Demonstrate ethical handling of confidential student and parent information.
• Adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
• Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon or established timelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Learning Center Principal
• Valid driver's license required.

General Responsibilities

• Adhere to policies and procedures of the Van Buren ISD
• Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon time lines.
• Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment : As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
