Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is a mission-driven, non-profit organization committed to developing affordable, workforce, and mixed-income rental housing in the Virginia, Washington DC, and Baltimore regions.

This part-time Program Assistant role supports after-school enrichment programs (k-5) and Teen Programs (6-12) at an Arlington, VA community, working 25 hours during the school year and up to 40 hours in summer.

Qualifications

  • Experience and desire to work with elementary or secondary-aged children and teens.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of students from varied economic and cultural backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and preparing materials for educational and recreational activities for children, youth, and parents.
  • Provide a healthy snack for children in the Afterschool Program and assist with homework.
  • Oversee after-school activities for elementary and teen students and support staff when needed.
  • Maintain the community room and collaborate on tasks beyond regular duties.

About the Job

Program Assistants play a crucial role in supporting after-school enrichment programs, including the Afterschool (k-5) and Teen Programs (6-12). Collaborating with the Resident Engagement Specialist on site, the Program Assistant will assist in the implementation of educational and recreational activities for children, youth, and parents in a multifamily apartment community.

This part‑time position is 25 hours during the school year and up to 40 hours for six weeks in the summer. During the school year, the schedule requires availability from approximately 2:00-8:00 pm 2 days a week and 2;00-6:00 pm twice a week (Monday-Thursday;) and admin hours on Fridays.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Planning and Implementing Programs
  • Assists in planning and preparing materials for educational and recreational activities for children, youth, and parents.
During Programs
  • Provides a healthy snack for children in the Afterschool Program.
  • Assists students with homework and to complete educational activities.
  • Oversees after-school activities for elementary and teen students. - taking the lead when other site staff are sick or on vacation
  • Maintains good discipline by supporting a behavior management program.
Maintaining Community Spaces
  • Ensures the community room is set up before and cleaned after the program.
Other
  • Collaborates willingly and cooperatively on tasks beyond regular duties.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience and desire to work with elementary or secondary-aged children and teens.
  • Experience with literacy or tutoring.
  • Spanish fluency a plus.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of students from varied economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Self-motivated and mission driven.
  • Collaborative work style with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Working at AHC

This part‑time position requires availability from approximately 2:00-8:00 pm 2 days a week and 2;00-6:00 pm twice a week (Monday-Thursday;) and admin hours on Fridays.
