Qualifications

• JD degree preferred.
• 3–5 years of professional liability claims experience.
• NYS Adjuster License required; multiple states preferred.
• Strong knowledge of claims practices, litigation processes, and insurance coverage.
• Ability to work independently and make sound judgment decisions.
• Excellent negotiation, analytical, and organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with claims management systems and MS Office.

Responsibilities

• Independently investigate, evaluate, and manage professional liability claims from inception through resolution.
• Analyze coverage issues and determine policy applicability.
• Establish and adjust reserves based on claim developments.
• Develop and execute claim resolution strategies, including negotiation.
• Guide litigation strategy, including discovery, motions, mediation, and trial preparation.
• Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as required.
• Provide accurate financial forecasting on claims portfolios.
• Maintain proactive communication with insureds, brokers, and management.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal guidelines.
• Prepare reports for management, carriers, reinsurers, and auditors as needed.
• Identify emerging issues, trends, and exposures within the professional liability space.

Professional Liability Claims Counsel

The Professional Liability Claims Counsel is responsible for managing a portfolio of complex professional liability claims, including Employment Practices Liability, Police Professional and Public Officials liability and other civil rights claims. The role requires independent claim handling, strong analytical skills, and the ability to evaluate legal liability, coverage, and damages while delivering high-quality customer service to insureds, brokers, and internal stakeholders.

How You Will Contribute

• Independently investigate, evaluate, and manage professional liability claims from inception through resolution.
• Analyze coverage issues and determine applicability of policy terms, conditions, and exclusions.
• Establish appropriate reserves and adjust them as necessary based on claim developments.
• Develop and execute claim resolution strategies, including negotiation and settlement.
• Guide litigation strategy, including discovery, motion practice, mediation, and trial preparation.
• Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as required.
• Evaluate liability and damages of exposure using legal, factual, and industry-specific knowledge.
• Provide accurate and timely financial forecasting on claims portfolios.
• Maintain proactive communication with insureds, brokers, and management.
• Deliver clear, concise, and timely claim updates and coverage determinations.
• Support underwriting teams with claim insights and loss trends.
• Ensure all claim handling adheres to regulatory requirements, internal guidelines, and best practices.
• Prepare reports for management, carriers, reinsurers, and auditors as needed.
• Identify emerging issues, trends, and exposures within the professional liability space.
• Provide feedback to underwriting and risk management on loss drivers and prevention strategies.

Licenses & Certifications

• NYS Adjuster License required; multiple states preferred.

Skills & Experience to be Successful

• JD degree preferred.
• 3-5 years of experience handling professional liability claims.
• NYS Adjuster License required, multiple states preferred Strong knowledge of claims practices, litigation processes, and insurance coverage.
• Experience managing complex and/or high-exposure claims.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and make sound judgment decisions.
• Excellent negotiation, analytical, and organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with claims management systems and Microsoft Office suite
• Preferred Experience in one or more specialty areas (e.g., Education, Public Entity, EPLI, E&O).
• Prior litigation experience or legal background.
• Familiarity with excess and surplus lines or specialty insurance markets.
• Exposure to reinsurance reporting and complex coverage issues.

Pay Range

$95,000 - $135,000 Annual

The pay range provided above is made in good faith and based on our lowest and highest annual salary or hourly rate paid for the role and takes into account years of experience required, geography, and/or budget for the role.
