Job summary

SOCOTEC US is seeking an experienced Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to provide QA oversight and advisory leadership from our Mechanicsburg, PA office. The role signs and seals survey deliverables and leads the survey department on boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, and ROW projects.

Candidate will mentor field crews and office staff, ensure PA and PennDOT standards compliance, and help grow a diversified survey practice across transportation and land development projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred).
  • 8+ years of progressive surveying experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with survey software (Carlson, Trimble Business Center, Civil 3D).
  • Experience with GPS, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in Pennsylvania (required).

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and develop junior survey staff.
  • Establish and maintain department QA/QC practices.
  • Provide responsible charge and signing/sealing of survey deliverables.
  • Oversee boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction, and as-built surveys.

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to provide Quality Assurance and advisory oversight to assist our Survey Department in our Mechanicsburg, PA office. This senior oversight role is responsible for reviewing, signing, and sealing survey and right-of-way (ROW) plans, ensure technical quality, and support business development efforts across transportation and land development projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mentor and develop the junior survey staff, including field crews and office staff.
  • Assist to establish and maintain department standards, procedures, and QA/QC practices.
  • Provide responsible charge and signing/sealing of survey deliverables.
  • Oversee preparation and review of boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction, and as-built surveys.
  • Ensure compliance with Pennsylvania standards and client requirements, as well as neighboring states.
  • Coordinate with engineering and environmental teams on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Support PennDOT and municipal project requirements.
  • Assist with proposals, scope development, and fee estimates.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships and identify growth opportunities.
Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred).
Experience/Training:
  • Minimum 8+ years of progressive surveying experience, including leadership responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of boundary law and surveying principles.
  • Familiarity with Pennsylvania survey standards and PennDOT requirements; surrounding states a plus.
  • Proficiency with survey software (Carlson, Trimble Business Center, Civil 3D).
  • Experience with CADD platforms (AutoCAD/Civil 3D; MicroStation a plus).
  • Experience with GPS, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Experience developing right-of-way (ROW) plots, plans, and mosaics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with oversight of survey teams and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Familiarity with transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Existing relationships with PennDOT, municipalities, and/or regional clients.
Required Licenses/Certificates/Registrations
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in Pennsylvania (required), surrounding states a plus.
Physical Demands of Job
  • In accordance with OSHA and other federal workplace regulations, a Professional Land Surveyor is expected to complete the following duties:
  • I. In a standard workday, ranging from 8-12 hours in length, this job requires a combination of the physical ability to:
  • – Sit/stand up to 8 hours;
  • – Walk up to 4 hours; and
  • – Roundtrip travel up to 6 hours.
  • II. Physical actions may include fieldwork using hands, arms, bending, squatting, and reaching consisting of: LIFT or CARRY and PUSH or PULL up to 50 pounds.
