Job summary

mcfa is seeking a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) to lead surveying projects in New York and New Jersey. Hybrid work with one day per week in Haddonfield, NJ. You will supervise field crews, prepare deliverables, and ensure regulatory compliance while collaborating with engineers and clients.

Ideal candidates have a PLS license in NY/NJ, 6+ years of surveying experience, and at least 2 years in project management. Strong boundary law knowledge and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • PLS license in New York and/or New Jersey.
  • Ability to obtain reciprocal licensure in the neighboring state.
  • Minimum 6+ years of progressive land surveying experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of project management experience.
  • Strong understanding of boundary law and survey computations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all phases of land surveying projects from proposal to deliverables.
  • Prepare, review, sign, and seal survey documents per licensing requirements.
  • Supervise field crews and office survey technicians.
  • Coordinate boundary, topo, ALTA/NSPS, ROW, utility surveys.
  • Ensure compliance with state regs, standards, and QC procedures.
  • Review deeds, plats, easements, title reports, and descriptions.
  • Prepare calculations, descriptions, maps, and exhibits.
  • Coordinate with engineering, environmental, and project teams.
  • Utilize GPS, robotic total stations, scanning, UAV data where applicable.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, staffing, and client communications.
  • Mentor junior survey staff and support recruiting.
  • Assist with proposals, fee development, and BD activities.
  • Develop and maintain surveying standards and QC processes.

How you'll get to contribute

The Professional Land Surveyor will be responsible for managing all aspects of land surveying projects throughout New York and New Jersey. The successful candidate will oversee field crews, prepare and certify survey deliverables, ensure compliance with applicable state regulations, and support business development efforts. This individual will serve as the Survey Manager and technical lead while collaborating closely with engineers, project managers, construction managers, and clients.

What you'll get to do
  • Manage all phases of land surveying projects from proposal through final deliverables.
  • Prepare, review, sign, and seal survey documents in accordance with New York and New Jersey licensing requirements.
  • Supervise field crews and office survey technicians.
  • Plan and coordinate boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, right-of-way, utility, construction, and as-built surveys.
  • Ensure compliance with state regulations, industry standards, and company quality procedures.
  • Review deeds, plats, easements, title reports, and legal descriptions.
  • Prepare survey calculations, legal descriptions, plats, maps, and exhibits.
  • Coordinate survey activities with engineering, environmental, and construction management teams.
  • Utilize GPS, robotic total stations, terrestrial scanning, UAV data (where applicable), and other modern surveying technologies.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, staffing, and client communications.
  • Mentor junior survey staff and assist with recruiting and developing the firm's surveying team.
  • Support proposal preparation, fee development, and business development activities.
  • Develop and maintain surveying standards, procedures, and quality control processes.
Who you are
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in New York and/or New Jersey.
  • Ability to obtain reciprocal licensure in the neighboring state if not currently licensed in both.
  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 6+ years of progressive land surveying experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of project management experience.
  • Strong understanding of boundary law, land records research, and survey computations.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with ability to travel throughout New York and New Jersey.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensure in both New York and New Jersey.
  • Experience with transportation, highway, bridge, utility, and infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with DOT, Port Authority, municipal, and public agency surveying requirements.
  • Experience working on construction staking and construction support services.
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with terrestrial laser scanning and mobile LiDAR technologies.
