Job summary

Interstate Engineering, Inc. is seeking a Professional Land Surveyor to lead Montana surveying projects and mentor a team of survey professionals.

The role combines field and office work, overseeing boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS surveys, and related deliverables while ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate has a Montana PLS license, 4+ years of surveying experience, and strong knowledge of ALTA/NSPS standards; proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business

Qualifications

  • Professional Land Surveyor license in Montana.
  • Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or related field; Bachelor’s preferred.
  • 4+ years surveying experience, preferably supporting civil engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles, state regulations, ALTA/NSPS standards, and legal documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage survey projects from planning through final delivery, ensuring quality, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Lead complex survey assignments including Boundary, Topographic, ALTA/NSPS, and Easement surveys.
  • Review, certify, and approve survey deliverables (plats, maps, reports, legal descriptions).
  • Analyze field data using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center; ensure compliance with standards.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to Survey Party Chiefs and Technicians.

What You'll Do
Project Leadership & Survey Operations
  • Manage survey projects from planning through final delivery, ensuring quality, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Lead complex survey assignments including:
    • Boundary Surveys
    • Topographic Surveys
    • ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys
    • Easement and Right-of-Way Surveys
  • Review, certify, and approve survey deliverables including plats, maps, reports, and legal descriptions.
Technical Expertise
  • Analyze field data using industry-leading software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center.
  • Ensure compliance with ALTA/NSPS standards, state regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Prepare and sign legal survey documents as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies that improve project accuracy and efficiency.
Team Development
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to Survey Party Chiefs and Survey Technicians.
  • Support training and development initiatives that strengthen team capabilities and promote professional growth.
  • Partner closely with engineers, designers, project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in project meetings, client consultations, and technical reviews.
  • Provide professional insights that contribute to successful project outcomes.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in Montana.
  • Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field (Bachelor's degree preferred).
  • 4+ years of surveying experience, preferably supporting civil engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles, state regulations, ALTA/NSPS standards, and legal documentation requirements.
  • Experience with:
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D
    • Trimble Business Center
    • GPS and GNSS equipment
    • Robotic total stations
    • Drone and/or LiDAR technology

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position includes a combination of office and field work. Candidates should be comfortable:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Walking long distances and navigating uneven terrain.
  • Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Traveling to project sites as needed.
  • Operating survey equipment, vehicles, and standard office technology.
