Job summary

SGMC Health in Valdosta is seeking a coder trainee to learn ICD-10 and CPT coding for professional services within the Revenue Cycle Medical Group. You will review medical records and assist in ensuring complete and accurate coding for diagnoses and procedures.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma, are enrolled in the AHIMA CCIS program or pursuing coding certifications, with prior medical office or billing exposure preferred. Training and on-the-job development are provided.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Enrollment in AHIMA CCIS program or current APA Certified Professional Coder program preferred.
  • AAPC or AHIMA coding certification must be obtained within one year of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Abstract ICD-10 and CPT codes for professional services.
  • Review and analyze medical records to verify and code diagnoses and procedures.
  • Support completion and accuracy of coding records for billing and compliance.

JOB LOCATION : SGMC Patient Financial Services

DEPARTMENT: REVENUE CYCLE MEDICAL GROUP

SCHEDULE: Full Time, 8 HR Day Shift, 8-5

Position Summary

Learns to abstract ICD-10 and CPT codes for Diagnosis and Procedures on professional services. Learns to review and analyze medical records in verifying and coding the diagnosis, evaluation and management service, minor procedures, or other codes required for the completeness and accuracy of the record.

EDUCATION

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Current student at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (WGTC) enrolled in the AHIMA CCIS program or currently enrolled with the APA Certified Professional Coder program preferred.
  • AAPC or AHIMA coding certification must be obtained within one year of hire date.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in a medical office setting preferred.
  • Previous experience with professional billing preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT required.
  • Good communication skills are essential along with time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS - ADA INFORMATION

Coder trainee may spend long hours working at computer terminal. Must be able to see and read names, numbers, and colors. The Coder is subject to high stress levels. The coder must have and maintain reliable high-speed internet and is able to agree to organizations IT Security policies for remote access work.
