Job summary

Detroit Thermal Systems, LLC, based in Romulus, MI, is seeking a Production Operations Leader to drive manufacturing plans and continuous improvement in designated production areas. You will coordinate processes to meet delivery, safety, quality, and cost objectives while fostering a culture of respect and teamwork.

The role emphasizes PDCA/8D problem solving, 5S, and close collaboration with engineering, maintenance, finance, HR, and logistics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred with 3–5 years in manufacturing operations.
  • Experience supervising production areas and salaried staff.
  • Experience with manufacturing launch, maintenance or engineering is a plus.
  • Proven leadership and ability to drive results; strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and control manufacturing processes to meet goals.
  • Support continuous improvement and lean initiatives in production areas.
  • Apply PDCA/8D problem-solving for root cause resolution.
  • Maintain safety, quality, and cost objectives; ensure 5S and zoning.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration with engineering, maintenance, HR, and others.
  • Manage union relationships and ensure adherence to the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Coach and mentor team members; develop development plans and performance feedback.
  • Monitor line performance, scrap reduction, and line down time metrics.
  • Evaluate process bottlenecks and implement improvements with data-driven analysis.

Job description

To support and drive the implementation and continuous improvement of activities in the designated production areas to meet production and business goals pertaining to; customer delivery, people, (safety/productivity), quality, and cost objectives. Primary responsibilities include the planning, coordination, and control of manufacturing processes and the designated production operating system. Assist the organization’s goals to foster a culture of respect, team work, lean manufacturing, standardize work, and continuous improvement. Apply a strong PDCA/8D corrective action process for problem resolution. Partner with cross functional areas within the plant to include; engineer, maintenance, finance, Human resources, logistics, quality, purchasing, sales, and the executive leadership team. Must establish and maintain a good working relationship with the union and develop a culture that promotes and achieve the plant objectives. Must establish a good working relationship with all internal and external customers. Develop and mentor team members to foster autonomy.

Responsibilities
  • Implement short & long term production planning requirements to achieve weekly MPS schedule compliance
  • Ensures production is efficient & cost effective
  • Ensures production is on time, of good quality and done in a safe manner
  • Manages health and safety and plant rules/ policies compliance: PPE compliance, uniform, safety shoes, safety glasses, and stretching activity daily.
  • Quality Matrix: line scrap by shift-trend, customer QR’s by line, FTT PPM
  • Ensures 5S and zoning is followed and maintained
  • Monitors the production process and follow deviation process/procedure requirements
  • Utilize structured problem-solving methodologies & incorporate data driven analysis
  • Ensures proper administration & application of the collective bargaining agreement amongst team and proactively consults with HR when necessary
  • Manage & motivates team in a manner that is inclusive and enhances employee engagement and respect
  • Evaluate the performance of subordinates including coaching, providing constructive feedback, and setting goals & development plans
  • Identify cross training and rotation with versatility matrix and ergonomic assessments.
  • Understand bottleneck and process improvements, tracking line down time in PLEX and RTO staffing to achieve engineering standards and eradicating non-standard activities.
  • Assure scrap procedures are followed, reduction of scrap, and eradicating daily scrap issues.

Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. 3-5 years of experience in manufacturing operations (preferably in automotive) with experience supervising production areas &/or salary employees. Manufacturing launch, maintenance and/or engineering experience a plus. Strong interpersonal skills, business acumen and knowledge in the areas of manufacturing engineering, maintenance, material planning & logistics, and quality. Proven leadership and ability to drive results.

Causal overtime may be required. Increased occasions of the aforementioned expected during launch.
