Job summary

Westlake Chemical in West Virginia is seeking a production shift supervisor responsible for health, safety and quality standards, including process safety management. You will oversee hourly production staff and coordinate with maintenance and support teams to meet customer requirements and long-term profitability.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of industrial supervisory experience.
• Experience in a union environment preferred.
• Problem solving and strong communication skills required.
• Ability to work independently or in a team.
• Experience with shift work and supervising a union workforce preferred.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervise and direct hourly employees in a production unit.
• Administer discipline as necessary according to the collective bargaining agreement and plant rules.
• Maintain a safe working environment while maximizing production efficiency.
• Ensure Environmental compliance at all times.
• Investigate all incidents (Health Safety, Environmental, Quality, Production) and report results to Management promptly.
• Understand and troubleshoot equipment and processes in the department.
• Assess situations and prioritize resources during shifts.
• Prepare equipment for maintenance and perform required permitting.
• Serve as Incident Commander during plant emergencies.
• Act as a member of the Emergency Crew during plant emergencies.
• Call in maintenance and operations personnel as needed.
• Communicate with coworkers via e-mail, logbook, or other means.
• Ensure 24/7 coverage for vacations and illnesses across required production positions.

SUMMARY

The role of this position is to ensure health, safety and environmental (HSE), process safety management (PSM), and quality management system (QSM) standards are met in the assigned area. This position oversees the operation and maintenance of the department to meet internal and external customer requirements (volume and quality) and long term profitability. This requires close coordination and communication with the Operations, Customer Service and Maintenance workgroups. This is a supervisory role responsible for the supervision of production staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Directly supervise and direct hourly employees in a production unit.
• Administer discipline as necessary according to the collective bargaining agreement and rules governing the operation of the plant
• Maintain a safe working environment while maximizing production efficiency
• Ensure Environmental compliance at all times
• Investigate all incidents (Health Safety, Environmental, Quality, Production, et) that occur in area of responsibility during shift in which the incident occurs, providing results of investigation to Management in a timely manner
• Understand and troubleshoot equipment and processes in the department
• Responsible for assessing situation(s) and prioritizing resources
• Prepare equipment for maintenance and perform required permitting
• Serve the role of Incident Commander during plant emergency events
• Serve as a member of the Emergency Crew during plant emergencies
• Call in maintenance and operations personnel as need
• Communicate with coworkers via e-mail, electronic logbook, or other means
• Along with the other shift supervisors of the area, ensure 24/7 coverage for vacations and illness in all required production positions

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of 5 years of industrial supervisory experience is a must. Experience in a Union environment is preferred
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office products are required
• Problem solving and strong communication skills are required
• The ability to work independently or in a team environment is required
• Previous emergency crew or Incident Command experience preferred but not required
• Experience working with a union workforce and administering labor contract
• This position could supervise up to 10 wage employees
• Previous experience with shift work preferred but not required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office. Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators. Travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
