Job summary

Weir in Bucyrus, Ohio is seeking a production planner to develop and maintain master schedules, coordinate with Purchasing and Operations, and support continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires 1–2 years of planning experience and strong Excel/ERP skills within a metal fabrication context.

Onsite work arrangement with a focus on lean manufacturing, data-driven decision making, and cross-team collaboration to meet customer commitments and drive efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Strong Excel skills and experience with ERP systems.
  • 1–2 years of production planning or scheduling experience.
  • Familiarity with metal fabrication or industrial production.
  • Ability to learn quickly and collaborate across multiple teams.
  • Experience with SAP or ERP systems in transition environments (nice-to-have).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and manage master production schedules to meet demand.
  • Review material receipts and inventory to identify shortages and coordinate actions.
  • Create and organize manufacturing order packets and documentation.
  • Use ProNest to maximize material utilization and support programming.
  • Communicate priorities and schedule changes to supervisors and leaders.
  • Prepare production schedules, capacity reports, and dashboards; analyze trends.
  • Apply Lean, PDCA, and continuous improvement to planning processes.
  • Demonstrate safety commitment and support a world-class safety culture.

What You'll Do
  • Production Planning & Scheduling: Develop, maintain, and manage master production schedules to meet customer demand and delivery commitments. Sequence and prioritize manufacturing orders daily based on capacity, material availability, labor resources, and customer requirements. Success means effectively scheduling shop work to support efficient production flow.
  • Material & Capacity Planning: Review material receipts, inventory levels, and component availability to identify shortages and coordinate corrective actions with Purchasing and Operations. Analyze plant capacity and staffing needs to support production demands and adjust schedules accordingly.
  • Work Order Management: Create, organize, and distribute manufacturing order packets, drawings, routings, and supporting documentation. Ensure accuracy and completeness of manufacturing documentation prior to release. Monitor planning exceptions and expedite requests to maintain smooth workflow.
  • Nesting & Programming Support: Use ProNest software to create and maintain nesting programs that maximize material utilization. Support machine programming activities for burning, punching, drilling, and other fabrication operations. Maintain nesting libraries and update manufacturing routings to reflect program readiness.
  • Production Coordination: Communicate production priorities and schedule changes to Manufacturing Supervisors and Team Leaders. Monitor work center performance, identify bottlenecks, and coordinate with Engineering on drawings and manufacturing changes. Provide order status updates to Sales, Shipping, and Customer Service.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Prepare and maintain production schedules, capacity reports, exception reports, and performance dashboards. Analyze production data to identify trends and improvement opportunities. Track KPIs and support operational decision-making through data analysis.
  • Continuous Improvement: Apply Lean Manufacturing, PDCA, and structured problem-solving methodologies to enhance planning and scheduling processes. Develop standard work for planning functions and support cross-training and backup coverage. Participate in initiatives focused on flow, inventory, and delivery performance.

What You'll Bring
Must-haves:
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems (Oracle preferred)
  • Approximately 1-2 years of relevant production planning or scheduling experience
  • Familiarity with manufacturing products and processes, ideally in metal fabrication or industrial production
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt, and work collaboratively across multiple teams
Nice-to-haves:
  • Experience with SAP or other ERP systems, especially in transition environments
  • Knowledge of production scheduling and workload management techniques
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Understanding of metal fabrication or construction equipment manufacturing environments
