Job summary

Howmet Aerospace is seeking a Production Operator for the Martinsville, VA facility. This night shift role runs Sunday evening through Wednesday morning, 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, in the Forge Shop and Grinder buildings with a five-person team operating large equipment.

Candidate will perform setups, inspections, and maintenance work while prioritizing safety and quality. Good teamwork, adaptability, and ability to work overtime are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Position requires strong learning aptitude learned on the job.
  • Stand, stoop, sit, climb steps and ladders, lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry in a Windows-based system.
  • Good reading and communication skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules; rotate day/night shifts; overtime/weekends in a 24/7 operation.
  • Authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship not available.
  • Access to export-controlled items.
  • Experience in hot metal working (preferred).
  • Experience operating hydraulic presses/dies; heavy equipment (preferred).
  • Experience with SAP and Microsoft Office (preferred).
  • Two or more years in manufacturing environment and safety training.

Responsibilities

  • Perform setups, adjustments, and modifications on equipment.
  • Inspect and ensure product quality.
  • Interact with other departments and company personnel.
  • Assist mechanical and electrical maintenance techs as needed.
  • Perform basic mechanical maintenance and preventive tasks.
  • Work with minimal supervision to complete tasks on time.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Complete required daily paperwork and computer entries.
  • Follow all safety rules including lockout procedures.
  • Work in a fast-paced production environment.

Howmet Structure Systems has an immediate opening for a Production Operator located at our Martinsville facility.

This is a night shift position working Sunday evening - Wednesday evening 7:00 pm - 7:00 am

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

Work will be performed primarily in the Forge Shop and Grinder buildings. Department consists of a five-person team operating large equipment to include a 5,000-ton forging press, conditioning grinder, large gas fired production furnaces, production saw, remote controlled overhead cranes and mobile manipulator material handling machines. Potential hazards include proximity of moving machinery, high temperatures and noise. PPE includes appropriate clothing (FR9), safety glasses, hard hat, and steel toed boots with metatarsal protection, hearing protection, and other safety equipment as required all provided by the company.

The successful candidate will:

  • Preform setups, adjustments, and other modifications on the equipment
  • Be responsible for the inspection and quality of the product
  • Interact with other departments and company personnel
  • Work with and assist Mechanical and Electrical maintenance techs as needed or required
  • Have basic knowledge of the mechanical functions of machinery and perform some preventive and predictive maintenance.
  • Must be able to work with little supervision to complete work on time
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Complete required daily paperwork and make computer entries
  • Follow all safety rules including lockout procedures
  • Have the ability to work in a fast-paced production environment.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Position requires a strong learning aptitude as 95% of the knowledge required must be learned on job.
  • The position requires an individual to stand, stoop, sit, climb steps and ladders, move equipment; bend, reach, lift at least 50 lbs. as needed while exercising good eye/hand coordination and depth perception.
  • Basic computer skills for entering and retrieving data in a windows-based system.
  • Strong reading for understanding and communication skills required.
  • Must be willing to work flexible schedules, available for any shift including overtime and weekends as needed in a 24/7 operation. Must be able to rotate from day to night shift.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position entails access to export-controlled items and employment offers are conditioned upon an applicant's ability to lawfully obtain access to such items.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in hot working of metals
  • operation of hydraulic presses and/or machinery, dies; experience operating heavy equipment such as cranes & forklift
  • knowledge of SAP and Microsoft Office software.

Two or more years in a manufacturing environment and industrial safety training.
