Job summary

FreshPoint, Inc. is seeking an experienced maintenance leader in the Laurel, MD area to supervise a team of technicians and drive the preventive maintenance program for production equipment.

You will work evenings and nights, coordinating with operations to meet uptime goals and maintain safety and GMP standards. The role requires strong leadership, hands-on mechanical/electrical skills, and knowledge of SQF/USDA food safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Two-year technical degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise safety policies and procedures (OSHA, NFPA, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain a preventive maintenance program for equipment.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, training, and coaching for maintenance staff.
  • Identify training needs and assist in implementing programs including root cause analysis.
  • Plan and oversee equipment rebuilds, line moves, installations, and calibrations.
  • Maintain shift communications and align team on goals.
  • Gather and report maintenance metrics such as uptime and PM compliance.
  • Maintain accurate spare parts inventory and on-site availability.

Job description

Job Summary

Support a group of equipment technicians responsible for equipment safety, uptime, and performance. Perform and supervise repairs and preventative/predictive maintenance on a variety of production equipment. Develop and maintain maintenance and calibration schedules for all tools, machinery, and equipment used in the manufacturing facility. Lead supporting activities for the operation team including 5S and Lean manufacturing activities, material handling improvements, production line configuration, and safety procedures. Manage workload with a positive attitude as a hands‑on team player in a collaborative work environment. This role also requires understanding of Quality Management Systems including SQF and GMP to ensure safety and quality of employees and products.

Work Schedule

Monday to Friday 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise company and industry standard safety policies and procedures – OSHA, NEC, NFPA, USDA, FDA, etc. Recognize and act on unsafe work conditions and engage with the maintenance and operations team to ensure compliance.
  • Develop and maintain an ongoing preventive maintenance program to ensure optimum equipment safety, reliability, and performance. Schedule preventive maintenance to effectively meet production needs.
  • Provide effective day‑to‑day supervision, training, and coaching to assigned maintenance associates to achieve required equipment uptime, repairs, and production goals. Work with associates to resolve technical and machine problems.
  • Identify skills and training needs for maintenance associates and assist in developing and implementing training programs, including hands‑on technical training, root cause analysis, failure mode analysis, and predictive and condition‑based maintenance.
  • Plan and oversee production equipment rebuilds, line moves, installations, setups, and calibrations. Work with OEMs on emergency repairs as needed.
  • Provide the shift‑to‑shift communication link to keep all team members working toward the same goals. Communicate to employees all issues that affect the plant.
  • Gather and communicate maintenance department and equipment performance metrics – uptime, PM compliance, overtime, etc.
  • Maintain, audit, and improve department records and inventories; ensure accurate spare parts inventory and on‑site availability to support equipment repairs and upgrades.
Qualifications
Experience
Required
  • Three (3) plus years of maintenance leadership experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Five (5) plus years of maintenance mechanic experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • Strong preventive maintenance development experience, familiarity with reliability‑centered maintenance principles preferred.
  • Experience using lockout tagout, job hazard analysis, hot work permits, confined space, etc.
Preferred
  • Experience working in a food processing environment and familiarity with USDA, FDA, and SQF policies and procedures.
  • Training in condition diagnostic techniques including vibration analysis, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing, and thermographic testing.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Two‑year technical degree (preferred).
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Must provide own tools (diagnostic equipment and major tools provided by Sysco) necessary to perform all maintenance repair and diagnostics.
  • Formal training in equipment maintenance, repair, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment is highly desired.
Skills
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental and food safety regulations.
  • Good computer skills, experience with Microsoft Office, a must.
  • Extensive knowledge and skill in preventive maintenance inspections and repair.
  • Extensive knowledge and skill in diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Extensive knowledge and skill with a multi‑meter, infrared thermometer, and megohmmeter.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and scissor lift.
  • Ability to read and interpret maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and processes.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both alone and in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple work orders in a fluid and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to concisely report and escalate equipment repair statuses and timeframes.
  • Proficient with CMMS.
  • Moderate knowledge of PLC, VFD/VSD, and relay logic (preferred).
  • Moderate knowledge and skill in welding and cutting (gas, electric, MIG, TIG) (preferred).
Physical Demands
  • Occurs frequently: sit, lift heavy items, use hand tools, operate equipment, stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, carry, and grasp tools.
  • Requires excellent hand and finger dexterity for wrenches and hand tools.
  • May involve repetitive motion of wrenches and hand tools.

Working Conditions

The work environment includes occasional exposure to wet, hot, extreme cold, and humid conditions, vibrating machinery, confined spaces, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, and moderate noise levels. Work may be non‑traditional hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and being on‑call. Occasionally, travel to other operating companies or corporate offices may be required.
