Job summary

Westlake Chemical in Texas is seeking a Chemical Engineer to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize production processes to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations that meet health, safety, environmental, quality and production objectives.

You will collaborate with Unit Managers and Production Supervisors, update P&ID's and GOI's, support efficiency studies, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced plant environment in Deer Park.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering with 2 years of process or production experience.
  • Excellent problem solving and communication abilities.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams and manage safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor day-to-day unit operation to minimize costs and maximize production.
  • Troubleshoot process problems and mechanical issues; support safety and environmental goals.
  • Assist in updating P&ID's, GOI's, and GOI procedures; support continuous improvement projects.

SUMMARY

The engineer will be responsible for the monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing the production processes to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective operations are achieved to meet health, safety, environmental, quality and production objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Monitor day-to-day operation of entire unit to minimize costs and maximize production.
  • Assist in performing engineering trouble-shooting of process problems, mechanical failures, and customer complaints.
  • Help in carrying out directions of Unit Manager or Production Superintendent to ensure Company policies and procedures are followed.
  • Support studies to improve operating efficiency, profitability, quality, safety, and to solve operation problems. Work with the Project Departments in the implementation of improvements and changes.
  • Work with the Unit Manager and Production Supervisors when needed for process problems, environmental, safety or employee problems.
  • Assist in developing and updating P&ID's, JSEA's and GOI's and Emergency Procedures.
  • Work on assigned projects. Help provide general plant support.

  • Fully supports Company goals of continuous improvement and operational excellence at strategic and tactical levels including reviewing area of responsibility for improvement opportunities to initiate projects or communicate ideas to management as well as active participation on project teams.

  • Perform duties in a manner that protects personal safety as well as the safety of others. Promptly report Safety, Health or Environmental issues or incidents to management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering with 2 years experience in process or production engineering
  • Strong problem solving, organizational & communication skills (written & oral)
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work well with people at all levels in the organization
  • Successful candidates must satisfy background screening, including motor vehicle record screening, drug testing & pre-employment physical requirements before starting work.
  • A current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Team leadership and project management skills
  • Manufacturing experience in an OSHA 1910.119 PSM facility is preferred
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean Manufacturing experience would be advantageous
