Job description

EnerVenue commercializes metal-hydrogen battery technology originally developed by NASA for the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station. Founded in 2020 by Stanford Professor Yi Cui and based in Silicon Valley, the company delivers grid-scale storage with 30,000+ cycle lifetimes, inherent fire-safety and a 30-year design life. Following a $300 million Series B extension in 2026, the Changzhou facility is in production ramp at 250 MWh annual capacity and scaling toward 1 GWh by 2027.

The Role

The Product Manager owns the Data Center use-case roadmap and align it with relevant stakeholders.

  • Owns the demand-side definition of the EnerVenue offer for data centers: what this segment needs, what it will pay for, and what it will not accept
  • Owns the Data Center Use Case Roadmap: the single dated view of segment demand and the primary input into the overall product roadmap. Each entry carries use case, target customer type, region, commercial window, business case and capability dependencies stated as requirements/needs; capability delivery dates come back from the product roadmap, and every unmet dependency is logged as a dated commercial consequence.
  • Global mandate for the data center segment across all regions, with regional prioritization set jointly with the CRO-team
  • Translates data center needs — availability, uptime tier, footprint, siting, fire and life safety, commissioning, integration with UPS and generation — jointly with Venture Developers, Product Engineers into product requirements the platform roles can act on
  • Carries the segment argument in both directions: articulates to the business what data centers actually buy, and articulates to the customer why a nickel-hydrogen system answers a problem lithium does not
  • Owns the honest position on where the technology fits this segment and where it does not (footprint and energy density are real constraints in dense campuses and must be managed as product strategy)
  • Focus is the full use‑case spread in data centers: bridging and ride‑through power, UPS augmentation or replacement, peak shaving and demand charge management, grid‑interactive and flexible‑load arrangements that shorten interconnection timelines, and backup duration where diesel is being displaced or constrained
Key Responsibilities
Platform Product & Solution Roadmap
  • Develop and maintain the multi‑generation platform product and solution roadmap, and take it to the CPO for release.
  • Chair the quarterly reconciliation forum where the domain use case roadmaps meet the platform roadmap; work the conflicts out with the functions involved and record each decision and deferral with the trade‑off stated.
  • Align the roadmap with the Manufacturing, Quality, Product Engineering and Research & Science technology roadmaps and with go‑to‑market priorities.
Roadmap, Segment intelligence and strategy (in partnership with venture/business developers)
  • Maintain the segment view: hyperscale, colocation, enterprise and AI/HPC build‑outs — who buys, on what cycle, against what constraints, and with what decision process
  • Track the constraints that actually govern this market: interconnection queues, utility capacity, permitting, diesel restrictions, water and cooling limits, power density per rack
  • Maintain competitive intelligence for storage in data centers — lithium BESS, lithium UPS, flywheel, fuel cell, on‑site generation — and keep an accurate, defensible comparison set
  • Produce and maintain the segment strategy and prioritization: which use cases, which customer types and which regions come first, and what has to be true for each
  • Monthly: updates the roadmap from market evidence and live pursuits with Venture Development and Sales, reviews the gap register with Product Engineering and Product Compliance, converts confirmed use cases into written requirements/needs and business cases, and reports movements and blockers to the Head of Product Management.
  • Quarterly: issues a versioned roadmap release, presents it to the relevant audience where segment demand meets the platform roadmap, re‑prioritizes use cases, customer types and regions for the coming four quarters, refreshes the underlying business cases, and gives Product Compliance the forward view of target markets and standards at least two quarters ahead of intended entry.
Requirements and business cases
  • Own the data center requirements set and feed it into the platform roadmaps: duty cycles and discharge profiles, response time and transfer requirements, availability and redundancy expectations, footprint per MW and per MWh, siting and setback constraints, acoustic and thermal limits, commissioning and witness‑test expectations
  • Write the business case behind every segment requirement — quantified value, addressable volume, price tolerance, and consequence of not building it
  • Define the reference configurations and target variants for data center deployment, and defend them against one‑off customization
Standards, codes and market entry
  • Give Product Compliance early and specific warning of target markets, applicable data center standards and code regimes, and required timing — including fire and life safety, indoor and adjacent‑to‑IT‑hall placement, and any relevant tier or availability frameworks
  • Identify the certification and evidence gaps that block entry into a target region or a target customer's approved‑vendor process, and elevate them with a dated commercial consequence with Venture Development
  • Translate compliance outcomes back into what can and cannot be offered in the segment
Enablement and evidence
  • Own the segment value proposition and the technical argument behind it: cell‑level safety, thermal tolerance, cycle life and asset life against the uptime, insurance and siting concerns that govern data center power decisions
  • Produce Sales and Venture Development enablement for this segment: positioning, configuration guidance, objection handling, sizing and comparison tools, technical Q&A for consulting engineers
  • Support Venture Development in customer and consultant engagements as the product authority; supply the technical evidence pack that gets EnerVenue onto approved‑vendor and design‑standard lists
  • Build and maintain the reference and proof base: pilots, deployed sites, measured performance
Feedback loop and discipline
  • Bring deployment and operating data back into product engineering decisions and research team
  • Flag every request that would create a new variant, and either justify it commercially or refuse it
  • Escalate to the Head of Product Management wherever segment demand and platform discipline conflict, with the trade‑off stated rather than the decision assumed
Boundaries — What Sits Elsewhere

The function is deliberately lean. It works only where these lines are respected from both sides.

  • Certification and standards execution — Product Compliance. This role supplies target markets, product definition and required timing.
  • Cell and vessel design, manufacturing engineering, chemistry and materials research — Product Engineering and Research & Science. This role sets the requirements they design against.
  • Engineering delivery of BMS, software, rack and containerised systems — Solution Development. This role defines what and why, not how.
  • Capacity planning and supply chain execution — Operations. This role supplies the volume and mix forecast and the cost targets.
  • Commercial model, pricing and contract terms of Energy‑as‑a‑Service — CRO. Investment, funding and asset structure behind it — CIO. This role defines what the product must deliver and prove.
  • Customer origination, partners and channel — Business Development and Sales. Use case roadmaps — the domain product managers, supported by business development.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Energy Engineering or a related technical field. An MBA or Master's is preferred.
Core Experience
  • 10+ years in product management, product line management or product engineering, with at least 5 years leading a product function or team.
  • Hands‑on experience with energy storage systems, batteries, power electronics or grid infrastructure; direct BESS product ownership is a significant advantage.
  • Working knowledge of BESS architecture: cell and module design, BMS, PCS, thermal management, fire protection, enclosure and EMS integration.
  • Hardware taken from concept through certification to volume mass production, with ownership of a stage‑gate process.
  • Requirements set and held against a larger and more capital‑intensive engineering organisation — accepted, built and shipped, not merely written.
  • Product economics: BOM cost modelling, $/kWh roadmaps, LCOS and TCO analysis, price architecture and margin management.
  • Familiarity with as‑a‑service, leasing or outcome‑based models in capital equipment or infrastructure, and with how such assets are financed, insured and underwritten — including what the product must measure and guarantee for the model to work.
  • Experience working alongside a separate compliance or certification function.
  • Collaborative by Default: you build the decision with the affected functions first, so what reaches the CPO is an aligned recommendation rather than an open argument.
  • Clear Recommender: you build the model, state the trade‑off, name the option you would take, and are comfortable being overruled without reopening the question.
  • Technically Credible: you hold your own with electrochemists and power electronics engineers, and still explain the value to a utility executive, a data centre critical‑power engineer or an investment committee.
  • Boundary Discipline: you can say a piece of work belongs to Compliance, Engineering or Sales rather than absorbing it and quietly becoming the bottleneck.
Language
  • Professional English is required for headquarters collaboration, international customer engagement and documentation.
  • Mandarin is a strong advantage for engagement with the Changzhou factory, local engineering teams and the domestic supply base. It is not a condition of the role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience with non‑lithium chemistries: metal‑hydrogen, nickel‑hydrogen, flow, sodium‑ion or long‑duration storage.
  • Experience defining the product side of an as‑a‑service or outcome‑based offer, working with investment and project finance teams on residual value, asset life and funding structure.
  • Long‑duration applications of four hours and above, or harsh‑environment and off‑grid deployments.
  • Data centre and critical‑power exposure, including how storage is specified by consulting engineers and approved onto vendor and design‑standard lists.
  • Utility‑scale project development, EPC or system integration background, and familiarity with grid codes and incentive frameworks in the US, Europe, Middle East or Australia.
What EnerVenue Offers
  • A defined mandate rather than a blank sheet: the organisational model, the roadmap boundary and the decision rights are already designed. The work is to staff them and make them hold.
  • Scope that runs past the hardware: shaping Energy‑as‑a‑Service and the financial products with the CRO and CPO, on an asset whose 30‑year life makes those models genuinely work.
  • A product with a structural difference to argue: intrinsic cell‑level safety, 30,000+ cycles and a 30‑year design life, in a market that has learned to price lithium's constraints as unavoidable.
  • Highly competitive senior management compensation including base salary, performance bonus and equity, on a non‑lithium storage platform with stable capital and a clear path to large‑scale mass production.
