Job summary

Separation By Design, Inc. is seeking a Project/Industrial Engineer to drive the full engineering cycle for our diesel exhaust fluid and oil & gas products.

You will design components, fixture tooling, and assemblies, advise on materials and fabrication processes, and ensure manufacturability with proper documentation and regulatory alignment. Ideal candidates have a four-year engineering degree or equivalent experience, strong SolidWorks skills, and familiarity with ERP-based BOMs.

  • Advanced use of SolidWorks for production of complex models and drawings.
  • Understanding of ERP systems for Bill of Materials creation and maintenance.

Separation By Design is seeking a qualified Project/Industrial Engineer to join our growing company in the Diesel Exhaust Fluid and Oil and Gas space. This person will be responsible for the full engineering cycle of the various company products by providing engineering and design support to Product Development & Production.If you’re passionate about sustainability, product innovation, and solving real-world engineering challenges, we’d love to hear from you.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Designs and creates solid models and drawings that allow the production of complex components required for the production of company products.Design activities include component & assembly design of both new and existing products; fixtures for machining and assembly; and specification of required textures and surface coatings, including those that are applied through outside operations.
  • Develops new product components using alternate materials and secondary operations to allow the attainment of prescribed physical properties and application characteristics.
  • Identifies and develops method/source for obtaining the alternate material or secondary operation.
  • Understands and utilize sound project management skills to produce prototypes, complete initial testing, and finalize design allowing the component to be manufactured.
  • Creates a complete set of documentation allowing the creation of a costed Bill of Materials. Documentation typically includes:
  • A parts list, with appropriate part numbers assigned to allow indication of component, component parts and assemblies as they move through the manufacturing process
  • Drawings and associated PDF files that show critical dimensions and tolerances. Dimensions and tolerances are defined and created using generally accepted principles such as GDT.
  • All drawings necessary for production operations.All production drawings such as machining and assembly drawings are appropriately configured for the operation that will use them.
  • Applies all rules, regulations, and guidelines to allow products to meet the requirements of licensing and approval bodies such as UL (Underwriter’s Laboratories), OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology), CE marking, ABS (American Bureau of Shipbuilding), etc.
  • Supports manufacturing by clarifying dimensions and fit, resolving tolerance problems, and describing methods for assembly.Supporting knowledge for this activity includes complete understanding of accessories, how they function, and how they are attached to the meter being manufactured.
  • Designs modification of existing product to overcome a manufacturing obstacle or to achieve additional component functionality.
  • Completes the necessary documentation for manufacturability using a variety of company and regulatory standards.
  • Researches and obtains answers to a variety of questions and problems. Questions and problem solutions may result from troubleshooting production issues, design problems, quality issues, or other internal departments. Creation of solutions and answers may require complex thought and extensive research of reference materials and subject matter experts outside of the TCS/Murray Equipment organization.
  • Maintains a “can-do” service attitude in keeping with the vision, goals and key performance indicators set by executive management.
  • Employs independent thought processes to set priorities, undertake activities, and solve problems.
Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Experienced with the design and use of mechanical systems, especially fluid handling systems including pumps, meters, valves, electric motors, and plumbing components.
  • Computer Literacy (Proficient in Microsoft office, especially PowerPoint, Excel, and Word).
  • Experienced with mechanical hand and power tools in a shop environment (Height Gauges, Metallurgy Testing, Micrometers, Profilometers, Thread Gauges, Use of Calipers, Use of Gauges).

Education & Experience:
  • Four-year Engineering Degree or 8 years’ experience in a design engineering position
  • Advanced use of SolidWorks design applications for the production of complex models and associated drawings and data tables
  • Understanding of use of ERP systems for Bill of Material creation and maintenance
  • Understanding of programming requirements for multi-axis computer controlled Makino machine centers.
  • Understanding of use of search terms and research methods for finding information
  • Capable of understanding Separation By Design product and accessory operation and terminology in a minimum amount of time.
Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Desk work with continuous use of telephones, computers and other office equipment.
  • Use of oral and written communication
  • Routinely responds to questions/problems on the production floor – these activities may require up to 2-3 hours in the production setting.
