Job summary

Cummins Inc. seeks engineering-focused interns to design and implement test systems for evaluating Cummins products in a lab setting.

You will work on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, instrumentation, data acquisition, and control systems for engineering evaluation and design optimization. You will learn to apply test-system specifications, design, validation, and process improvement tools while collaborating with lab customers and suppliers.

Qualifications

• Must be a full-time enrolled student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at a U.S. college/university.
• Minimum 2.5 GPA preferred.
• Commitment: 4–6 months to 12 months.
• Able to work 40 hours per week.
• Willingness to learn from others on the job.
• Must reside within the continental U.S.

Responsibilities

• Investigate test system and process problems and document results with guidance.
• Improve test system specs, design, validation, and related tools (FMEA, problem solving, hazard analysis).
• Support input from lab customers, technicians, and suppliers; deliver test system requirements and instructions.
• Assist with component selection, calibration, and operating processes affecting accuracy and cost.
• Participate in problem resolution for moderately complex components or systems.
• Execute established work processes while building technology and knowledge.
• Coordinate work among engineers and technicians without direct people management.
• Contribute to team goals and build competency in core areas.

Job description

This laboratory test focused position designs or specifies test systems that allow operation of Cummins’ products in a laboratory environment for engineering evaluation to optimize our product designs. This position also involves the specification, design, implementation, validation, and support of test systems including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

• Investigates product test system and process problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, may include activities in problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.
• Applies and supports the improvement of processes such as test system specification, design and validation and tools such as FMEA, 7-step problem solving, and process hazard analysis required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.
• May support more experienced team members with obtaining input and negotiation with lab customers, lab technicians, and component suppliers and delivers test system requirements, processes, and instructions to lab technicians, product functional test engineers and equipment suppliers.
• May support more experienced team members with decisions in the areas of component selection, calibration processes, and operating processes that impact test equipment accuracy, reliability, and operating cost.
• May include activities in problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services.
• Supervised execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.
• No direct management of people but could involve limited coordination of work amongst engineers and technicians.
• Contributes effectively toward team goals and develops proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

2026 Monthly Salary Range By Degree Level

• Bachelor's- $4,100 - $5,000
• Master's - $6,000
• PhD - $7,300

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.

Internship Program Criteria

• Must be a full-time enrolled student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited U.S. college/university
• Minimum 2.5 or above GPA preferred
• Must be able to complete a minimum of 4-months to 6-months or a maximum of a 12-months commitment
• Must be able to complete 40 hours per week
• Willingness to learn from others on the job
• Must be currently residing within the continental U.S.

U.S. Early Careers Eligibility Requirements

Summer Intern:

• Students must be enrolled full-time at an accredited U.S. college or university, actively pursuing a degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, MBA, or JD), with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Candidates must currently reside within the continental United States.
• Students are expected to work 40 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks.

International Student Eligibility (U.S. based roles):

F-1 visa students must have approved Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Occupational Practical Training (OPT) before their Early Career assignment begin. CPT/OPT must relate to their degree and be authorized by their university. Students are responsible for securing this approval through their school’s international office.
