Job summary

Amphenol Communications Solutions (ACS), a division of Amphenol Corporation, seeks a Product Development Engineer to drive precision engineering on high-speed cabled backplanes. You will design float mechanisms, cartridges, and related components, collaborating with internal manufacturing, vendors, and other engineering teams.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in mechanical and electrical systems, CAD tools (Creo, SolidWorks), and 5+ years in electronics design.

Qualifications

  • Requires MS/BS in Engineering with significant electronics industry experience; PhD preferred.
  • Strong understanding of both mechanical and electronic systems; CAD experience with Creo, SolidWorks, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Understand evolving industry needs and product requirements.
  • Significant participation in automation design with NPI and machine design teams to enable high-volume, high-quality production.
  • Coordinate with Signal Integrity (EE) to ensure mechanical design supports electrical performance.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Integrity to ensure reliability across the product lifecycle.
  • Work with software engineers to integrate electronic control systems into mechanical frameworks as needed.
  • Aid in material selection (metal, plastic, coatings) and develop initial specifications and technical documentation.
  • Interface with customers during multiple project phases and assist in sales processes.
  • Engage suppliers on DFM, prototyping, tooling design, qualifications, and travel to sites worldwide.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Product Development Engineerrole will focus on Precision Engineering and serve a pivotal role on the Amphenol CS's Cable Backplane Product Developmentteam. The ideal candidatewill blendexpert knowledge from electrical and mechanical engineering to develop, design, and maintain the mechanisms on our next generation of high speed cabled backplanes. The Product Development Engineerwill design float mechanisms, cartridges, and similar mechanisms that enable our cabled backplanes to solve our customer's needs. This role also requires interaction with internal manufacturing sites, external vendors, and all of the other engineering disciplines within the organization.

A strong candidate should be motivated by technical challenges, know how to be a truly collaborative member of a team, and be willing to wear a number of hats throughout the many phases of a project.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand the evolving industry needs, and resultant requirements for our products.
  • Significant participation in automation design, working directly with the NPI and Machine Design (automation) teams to ensure the product design can be built in high volume, efficiently, and with the highest quality.
  • Work directly with Signal Integrity (EE) team to ensure the mechanical design supports the electrical performance requirements of the product.
  • Work directly with Mechanical Integrity team to ensure the mechanical design provides for a high reliability (quality) over the life of the product. Including meeting all applicable industry, and internal, specifications.
  • Collaborate with software engineers to integrate electronic control systems into mechanical frameworks as needed.
  • Aid in material selection (metal, plastic, surface coatings, etc).
  • Develop initial product specifications and technical documentation.
  • Interface directly with customers during multiple phases of a project, and aiding in the sales process.
  • Work directly with internal and external suppliers on Design for Manufacture (DFM), prototyping exercises, production tooling design and qualifications, and occasional travel to manufacturing and assembly sites around the world.
  • Provide technical assistance to product marketing and sales teams as needed.
  • Participate in fixture/tooling design and in creating and managing test plans.
  • Active participation in cost reduction projects (alternative material discovery, manufacturing efficiency improvements, etc).
  • Occasional requirement of making presentations to upper management on projects/development.
  • Occasional required attendance of industry trade shows, expositions, conferences.

Qualifications:

  • MS/BS in Engineering with significant experience in an electronics industry required; PhD in Engineering preferred
  • A robust understanding of both mechanical and electronic systems is crucial, as is expertise in computer-aided design (CAD) software(Creo, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Minimum of 5+ years industry experience in design, preferably within the precision engineering discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; work history of collaboration and execution during the various stages of product design
  • Good understanding of GD&T methodologies, experience in tolerance analysis, and FEA tools
  • Knowledge of copper alloys and high-performance engineering plastics, experience designing and working with CNC milled parts and/or in sheet metal fabricaiton
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite
  • Ability to communicate with both technical & non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently
  • Ability to travel ~15% domestic and international
