Job description

Voltas Medical is a growing medical device company focused on developing and commercializing innovative medical technologies. As an expanding organization, our team works collaboratively across product development, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and operations to bring safe, effective, and manufacturable medical devices from concept through commercialization.

We are looking for a hands-on engineer who thrives in an environment where engineering extends beyond a single discipline. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, working directly with products and processes, and learning how medical devices move from an idea through development and into manufacturing.

Position Summary

The Product Development Engineer will primarily support research and development activities while collaborating with Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Operations.

This is a broad engineering position designed for someone who wants exposure to multiple aspects of medical device development. Depending on project needs, the role may involve product design, prototyping, testing, engineering documentation, manufacturing support, design controls, and quality-related activities.

We are looking for an engineer who is technically curious, willing to learn, comfortable working hands-on, and interested in understanding not only whether a design works, but how we demonstrate that it works and how it can be consistently manufactured.

The right candidate does not need to be an expert in every area. This role provides an opportunity to develop experience across the medical device product lifecycle while working closely with experienced team members and cross-functional partners.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary based on project and business needs and may include:

  • Support medical device development activities from early concepts through design transfer and commercialization.
  • Assist with development and evaluation of product concepts, prototypes, components, instruments, and assemblies.
  • Create and update engineering drawings, specifications, technical documentation, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support prototype development, feasibility testing, engineering evaluations, and design verification activities.
  • Perform or coordinate mechanical, dimensional, functional, and performance testing.
  • Analyze engineering and test data and document results and conclusions.
  • Assist with fixture, tooling, and test method development.
  • Apply engineering principles such as material selection, dimensional analysis, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturability.
  • Work with manufacturing personnel and suppliers to resolve technical issues and improve product or process performance.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk management activities, and other product development discussions.
  • Support development and maintenance of design control documentation such as design inputs, design outputs, verification documentation, and traceability.
  • Assist with identification and evaluation of product characteristics that may require additional manufacturing or inspection controls.
  • Support manufacturing process development, work instructions, inspection methods, and design transfer activities.
  • Participate in engineering investigations related to product, component, supplier, or manufacturing issues.
  • Assist with root cause investigations and corrective actions when engineering input is required.
  • Support evaluation of nonconforming product and other quality-related activities as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Regulatory team members to ensure engineering documentation and activities align with the company's Quality Management System and applicable medical device requirements.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to engineering, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, and company leadership.
  • Take ownership of assigned engineering activities and follow projects through completion.
  • Support additional engineering activities as needed within a growing organization.
What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys working with physical products and solving hands-on engineering problems.
  • Is technically curious and willing to learn areas outside of their primary engineering discipline.
  • Is comfortable working in an environment where priorities and projects may evolve as the company grows.
  • Approaches problems methodically and is willing to investigate before jumping to conclusions.
  • Understands the importance of documenting engineering decisions and results.
  • Is comfortable asking questions and seeking input when working in unfamiliar technical areas.
  • Can balance technical detail with practical problem-solving.
  • Communicates effectively with people from different technical and professional backgrounds.
  • Takes ownership of assignments and follows through on commitments.
  • Wants exposure to multiple aspects of product development rather than working within a narrowly defined engineering function.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to create clear and organized technical documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a hands-on, on-site engineering environment.
Preferred Qualifications

The following experience is helpful but not required:

  • Internship, co-op, academic, or professional experience involving product development, manufacturing, or medical devices.
  • Experience with CAD and engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, dimensional inspection, or tolerance analysis.
  • Exposure to product testing, test method development, or engineering laboratory work.
  • Familiarity with medical device design controls or regulated product development.
  • Exposure to risk management tools such as FMEA.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, ISO 14971, FDA Quality System requirements, or other regulated industry standards.
  • Exposure to manufacturing processes, process validation, or quality engineering.
  • Experience working with suppliers or contract manufacturers.

Candidates are not expected to have experience in all of the areas listed above. We are interested in engineers who have a strong technical foundation, demonstrate an ability to learn, and are excited about developing broader experience within the medical device industry.

Voltas Medical offers a benefits package designed to support employees professionally and personally. Benefits may include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off.
  • Company-provided time off and holidays.
  • Potential equity opportunities based on role and eligibility.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and increased responsibility.
  • Broad, hands-on experience across multiple areas of medical device development and commercialization.
  • The opportunity to work closely with company leadership and contribute directly to product and process development in a growing organization.

Specific benefit offerings and eligibility are subject to the company's current benefit plans and policies.

What Success Looks Like

Initially, success in this role means becoming familiar with Voltas Medical's products, development processes, engineering practices, and Quality Management System while contributing effectively to assigned engineering projects.

As experience grows, this individual will take increasing ownership of product development activities and become comfortable working across engineering, manufacturing, and quality-related challenges.

Over time, the Product Development Engineer can develop into a versatile technical resource who understands how engineering decisions affect product performance, risk, manufacturability, quality, and the end user.

This role provides an opportunity to gain significant hands-on experience and contribute directly to both the products we develop, and the engineering systems used to develop them.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Voltas Medical is not providing employment visa sponsorship for this position. Hiring ASAP.
