Job summary

Hy-Vee, Inc. is seeking a Produce Clerk in our Produce department. You will keep the department stocked, fresh, and inviting while delivering friendly customer service on every shift. Duties include stocking, rotating, processing deliveries, checking invoices, and assisting customers with product needs.

Applicants should be comfortable on their feet, able to perform basic math, and follow sanitation and safety guidelines. Training is provided; 18+ age requirement applies.

Qualifications

• No extensive experience required; training provided.
• Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, counting.
• Good communication with customers and team.
• Ability to follow sanitation and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers with a smile and assist with needs to improve their shopping experience.
• Review merchandise freshness and rotate stock.
• Maintain adequate product supply and prepare production lists.
• Check in product, stock and review invoices as needed.
• Prepare, finish and replenish products as required.
• Keep work area clean, sanitary and safe.
• Dispose of waste and assist with department upkeep.
• Order product and price items for customers.
• Answer phone calls with friendly service.
• Follow Hy-Vee dress code and department guidelines.
• Help with additional tasks or projects as they arise.

What You’ll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect:

• Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer with a smile, assisting them with their needs, and going the extra mile to make their shopping experience a great one

• Review the status and appearance of merchandise for freshness and replenish and rotate product to maintain quality standards

• Ensure an adequate product supply is ready and on hand; develop or follow a production list and anticipate daily product needs for the department

• Check in product, put product away, and review invoices as needed

• Prepare, finish, and replenish product as necessary

• Practice proper sanitation procedures and keep the work area clean, neat, and safe at all times

• Remove trash in a timely manner and assist with general department upkeep

• Order product and supplies and price products for customers as needed

• Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call

• Follow Hy-Vee’s dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelines

• Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

Your Skills

You don’t need extensive experience for this role; we’ll provide the training you need to succeed. To hit the ground running, you’ll need to be able to:

• Bring commitment to Hy-Vee’s mission and a genuine passion for helping customers

• Follow written and verbal instructions carefully and with attention to detail

• Apply basic math skills including simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording

• Communicate clearly with customers and co-workers and contribute positively to the team

• Learn and apply proper sanitation, food safety, and department procedures

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health Wellness Home; Produce Department Manager; Assistant Produce Department Manager

Education and Experience

• Less than high school diploma or equivalent experience accepted

• Six months or less of similar or related work experience; we’ll provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

• Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

• Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

• Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

• Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role where things stay busy and engaging. You’ll work in the produce department and can expect frequent exposure to temperature extremes and dampness, as well as possible equipment movement hazards, electrical equipment, and cleaning chemicals and solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
