Job summary

CountryMark in Indiana is seeking a senior process safety engineer within the process engineering team focused on process safety. You will evaluate process safety for MOCs and projects, and manage the flare system including the PSV database, acting as SME for LOPA analyses.

You will lead design analyses for relief scenarios, provide guidance on engineering packages, and mentor staff while staying current on industry safety practices and regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years’ experience in oil and gas industry.
  • Valid driver's license for company vehicle use.
  • Understanding of advanced engineering principles and problem solving.
  • Ability to lead initiatives and work with a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and process software.

Responsibilities

  • Perform process safety engineering activities to support facility design and daily operations.
  • Generate technical recommendations to improve flare and safety valve systems.
  • Size new pressure relief devices and update flaring models as needed.
  • Lead design analyses ensuring proper relief scenarios are considered.
  • Provide owner acceptance reviews of design packages from internal or external firms.
  • Mentor less experienced engineers and support project execution.
  • Lead MOC, PHA, LOPA, SIL verifications and safety audits.

Job description

Responsible for providing senior level engineering capability within the process engineering team specifically focused on process safety. Job duties include process safety evaluations for MOC’s and projects, managing the flare system including ownership of the PSV database and process. Act as the resident SME for LOPA analysis. Remain abreast of industry changes to Process Safety best practices and regulations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (not limited to the following):

  • Perform process safety engineering activities required to support facility design, process control configurations, and daily unit operations.
  • Generate and implement technical recommendations to improve and close gaps within the flare and safety valve systems.
  • Be the focal point for the sizing of new Pressure relief devices and updating the flaring model as needed.
  • Support/lead design analysis to ensure unit modifications have proper relief scenarios considered in the design.
  • As assigned, perform owner acceptance reviews of process and equipment design packages developed by internal or third party engineering firms.
  • Provide leadership and coordination of engineering projects to ensure effective implementation of assigned projects.
  • Learns and trains others in process safety for area of responsibility. Keeps process safety as primary concern in all technical recommendations. Leads and/or participates in MOCs, PHAs, LOPA, SIL verification and PSM audits as necessary and completes assigned safety action items.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced Engineering personnel to improve overall team capabilities.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment in selecting and applying engineering methods to solve plant issues, often times with minimal direction from supervision or peers.
  • Support the achievement of engineering schedules, organizational commitments and other assigned tasks.
  • Participate in industry forums, trade association meetings and other professional organizations to stay abreast of the latest technological and strategic industry topics with a focus on Process Safety.
  • Train operations, maintenance, technical staff and other refinery staff in Process Safety principles as needed.
  • Monitors adequacy and closure of corrective action items related to incident investigations, RCAs, audits, PHA recommendations, MOC action plans, agency inspections, and all other applicable regulatory/compliance items.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities (not limited to the following):

  • Foster an environment of open communication, problem resolution, and project ownership.
  • As required, perform equipment performance monitoring and analysis of equipment failures during facility operation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, industry codes and industry standards.
  • Apply industrial process safety practices in the performance of all field duties.
  • Identify areas for performance and process improvements.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines and how to interface effectively across all functional group within the refinery.
  • Backup and support process and development engineers in projects or assignments as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications (refers to job, not incumbent):

Education: Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.

Experience:Minimum: + 10 years’ experience in oil and gas industry.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: Employee must have valid driver’s license if operating a company vehicle or their own vehicle for work purposes.

Other:

  • Understanding of advanced engineering principles and process plant problem solving techniques is required.
  • Ability to take direction, function as a team member and lead assigned initiatives to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office platform.
  • Working knowledge of process simulation tools, data historians and other applicable industry software tools.
  • Self-motivated and can work unsupervised focused on meeting deliverable timelines.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced and diverse team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize multiple assignments to ensure completion of tasks within stated time requirements.
  • Provides thorough, efficient, and effective customer service to individuals at all levels within the organization.
  • Awareness of all safety, health, process safety and environmental issues that impact the unit, the refinery and the community.
  • Ability to present in writing and oral presentations the business case for proposed process improvements, projects and other technical recommendations.
  • Understand business drivers, corporate goals and strategies and how the refinery supports these corporate initiatives.
  • Develop and make presentations to management regarding unit operations, project status and improvement opportunities.
  • Able to function independently as an interface with project design firms representing the refinery’s interests in project decisions.
