Job summary

TC Energy Corp. is seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join the Process Safety team, based in Houston, TX or Calgary, AB. You will provide regional process safety support to operations and field safety teams, implementing key programs and strengthening safety culture.

The role requires a Engineering degree, P.Eng. eligibility, and 4+ years in pipelines/oil & gas or petrochemical sectors, with strong knowledge of P&IDs, risk assessment, and industry standards.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary Degree in Engineering.
• P.Eng. registration with APEGA in good standing (Calgary, AB work emphasis).
• 4 years of pipelines, oil & gas, or petrochemical experience.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs and related data sheets.
• Experience in risk scenario development techniques and consequence modeling.
• Familiar with industry codes, standards and practices (OSHA PSM, CSA, API, NFPA, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Provide technical process safety support for operations, field safety and engineering.
• Engage with frontline operations to identify process safety concerns and scope evaluations.
• Maintain and oversee enterprise process safety procedures including MOC and pre-startup safety review.
• Assist with implementing enterprise process safety programs and provide training.
• Support regional projects and MOC activities via PHA facilitation and reviews.
• Review incidents and near-misses; drive actions to prevent recurrence and share learnings.
• Monitor regional process safety performance and identify gaps from assessments.
• Assist investigation teams with process safety events and root-cause analysis.
• Track regional corrective actions from PHAs and investigations; help close gaps.

The Opportunity

Our Technical Safety and Risk is currently seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join the Process Safety team, based in Houston, TX or Calgary, AB.

Reporting to the Manager, US Process Safety, the successful candidate will provide regional process safety support to our operations and field safety teams. This position will assist our operations team with development, implementation, and execution of key process safety programs, while strengthening our safety culture.

What You’ll Do

• Provide technical support for operations, field safety and engineering regarding process safety and risk management matters in their assigned region and/or line of business
• Engage with frontline operations to identify and understand potential process safety concerns and prioritize them for further evaluation
• Maintain and oversee standardized enterprise process safety procedures, including safety system bypass, management of change, and pre-startup safety review
• Assist with the implementation of new or updated enterprise process safety programs within assigned regions by providing training, interpretation, technical support, and advice
• Support regional projects and MOCs via PHA facilitation, design reviews, stage gate reviews, and PSSR support
• Review incidents and near-hits, to support the classification process safety events. Drive actions to prevent re-occurrence and share learnings from across the business unit and organization
• Monitor regional process safety performance by providing support for assurance activities against key process safety programs and requirements. Identify gaps and provide insights from process safety assessments
• Support investigation team with respect to process safety events
• Track and maintain regional corrective actions stemming from facility PHAs, incident investigations and assurance activities. Support the closure of identified gaps as required
• Support regulatory event submissions and information requests

Minimum Qualifications

• Post-secondary Degree in Engineering
• Registered, or eligible to register, with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing (applicable for Calgary, AB employees)
• 4 years of Pipelines, oil & gas or petrochemical experience
• Proven ability to read & interpret P&ID’s, pressure equipment data sheets, and other integrity related documents
• Experience with risk scenario development techniques, including assignment of probabilities and consequences
• Working knowledge of industry codes, standards and practices relevant to process design and safety (e.g. OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, CSA, ASME, API, NFPA, ANSI, etc.) and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in design, commissioning, start-up and operation of oil & gas, or chemical facilities
• Proficiency with PHA PRO, PHAST, SAP and Enablon
• Experienced in facilitating Process Hazard Analysis using a variety of methodologies (e.g. Hazard Identification (HAZID), PHAs (What-if, HAZOP, LOPA, Bowtie analyses)
• Understanding of asset life cycle management, system reliability and operations
• Experience with MOC processes and evaluating change
• Working knowledge of Safe Work Practices
• Knowledgeable with process safety key performance indicators

This position requires candidates to:

• This position will involve travel and overnight stays away from home (estimated up to 30% of work schedule during peak work periods)
• Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
