The Process Engineer is responsible for developing, supporting, validating, and continuously improving post-SMT (Surface Mount Technology) manufacturing processes. These processes include conformal coating, dispensing, potting, mechanical assembly, box build, depaneling/routing, torque-controlled assembly, press-fit, labeling/marking, packaging, and DIP (Dual In-line Package) operations.
This role works closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, Maintenance, New Product Introduction (NPI), and customer teams to ensure manufacturing processes are capable, repeatable, efficient, and compliant with customer and quality requirements.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on manufacturing experience, a solid understanding of electronics assembly and mechanical integration processes, and the ability to develop fixtures, define process parameters, troubleshoot manufacturing issues, and drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
1. Backend Process Engineering
- Develop, validate, maintain, and optimize backend manufacturing processes, including conformal coating, dispensing, potting, UV/thermal curing, mechanical assembly, box build, torque-controlled assembly, press-fit, depaneling/routing, labeling/marking, packaging, and DIP operations.
- Define and control process parameters, recipes, process sequences, and acceptance criteria.
- Develop assembly methods, workstation requirements, tooling, fixtures, and manufacturing sequences.
- Troubleshoot backend manufacturing defects and process-related production issues.
- Improve product quality, productivity, ergonomics, cycle time, scrap, and rework.
2. Conformal Coating, Dispensing, and Potting
- Develop and optimize coating programs, spray paths, masking methods, coating thickness, and curing parameters.
- Support dispensing and potting process development, including material handling, mixing, application, and curing requirements.
- Troubleshoot coating, dispensing, adhesion, curing, and material-related defects.
3. New Product Introduction (NPI) and Engineering Support
- Support prototype builds, NPI activities, pilot builds, and production launches.
- Review product designs and provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) recommendations.
- Develop process flows, work instructions, tooling requirements, and manufacturing documentation.
- Participate in PFMEA, Control Plan development, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, process qualification, and production readiness reviews.
- Collaborate with Maintenance Engineering on equipment-related issues while maintaining ownership of process parameters and manufacturing requirements.
4. Quality, Documentation, and Continuous Improvement
- Analyze recurring defects and manufacturing trends, leading or supporting root-cause investigations and corrective and preventive actions.
- Support internal and customer quality audits and ensure processes comply with customer, engineering, quality, and workmanship requirements.
- Develop and maintain work instructions, SOPs, process specifications, process parameters, troubleshooting guides, PFMEAs, Control Plans, and other engineering documentation.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives to improve process efficiency, quality, and reliability.
