Job summary

Celanese Corporation in Montgomery, AL is seeking a process engineer with a strong chemical engineering background to support utilities, plant projects, and reliability initiatives.

You will perform sizing, calculations, and data-sheet development for pumps, heat exchangers, and PRDs, while collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, and Projects to drive safe, efficient operations.

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills are essential; experience with HTRI/ASPEN is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of process engineering experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate technical discussions with cross‑functional groups.

Job description

Overview

Celanese Corporation is a global chemical leader in the production of differentiated chemistry solutions and specialty materials used in major industries and consumer applications.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support to the utilities unit.
  • Develop and support plant projects, environmental activities, and unit stewardship, quality, and reliability.
  • Perform heat exchanger rating, hydraulic calculations, relief calculations, and leak calculations.
  • Perform P&I&d development, vessel sizing, line sizing, heat exchanger sizing, and pump sizing.
  • Specify pumps, heat exchangers, steam traps, instruments, and other equipment via data sheet development.
  • Specify pressure relief devices (PRDs) and be familiar with applicable industry regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Develop and issue process letters to document process studies, designs, and evaluations.
  • Work with Capital Project Managers on process discipline related project design and installations.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and elevate them to the Technology Leader for addition to Unit Technology Plan.
  • Participate with hazard identification studies (What-If, HAZOP) and evaluate risk through LOPA for process changes.
  • Collaborate effectively with multiple disciplines (Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Global Process Technology, Process Control, Projects) during unit changes and capital projects.
  • Manage competing priorities, supporting daily operations and multiple simultaneous projects or assignments.
  • Participate in the Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Participate and/or lead root cause analyses (RCAs).
  • Support tracking of Key Process Indicators (KPIs) and raise emerging issues to the Technology Leader.
  • Support unit operations with troubleshooting requests, and assist with unit startups, shutdowns, and turnarounds.
  • Mentor and coach entry-level process engineers.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of process engineering experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate technical discussions and communicate with cross‑functional groups (Operations, Reliability, Vendors, regional and global resources).
  • Ability to work with Maintenance, Reliability, Projects and Operations teams.
  • Analytical thinking to design strategic plans for complex situations.
  • Technical, reliability, and process safety knowledge.
  • Knowledge of process design, instrumentation, process control, statistics, hydraulics and calculations, and process safety.
Preferred
  • Experience with process engineering tools such as ASPEN and HTRI.
  • Experience with demineralization units.
