Job description

Process Engineer

This position is an individual contributor that is responsible for leading process, safety, and quality improvements at the Nouryon Battleground site. Battleground primarily produces metal alkyls, sold primarily as co‑catalysts to major thermoplastic resins and rubber manufacturers (producers of polyethylene, polypropylene, and EPDM). The product line is complex with over 30 metal alkyl products (plus formulations) produced at Battleground. Products are extremely hazardous (pyrophoric, meaning they ignite on contact with air) and are highly reactive with water. The site also manufactures High Purity Metal Organics (HPMO) for the semiconductor and LED industries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and implement site improvements for site KPIs (OEE, reliability, RFT, etc.)
  • Provide technical support for plant processes during normal operation and upsets
  • Facilitate and resolve findings from hazard and operability studies (HAZOP) and hazard assessments
  • Lead root cause investigations for incidents and near misses
  • Lead process design efforts for small and medium Capex projects
  • Provide technical and analytical expertise for internal and external customers on problems arising from manufacture and use of organometallic compounds, including preparation of 8D corrective action reports
  • Act as a technical liaison for suppliers and customers to perform audits, review specifications, and provide documentation on demand, including supporting internal audits
  • Support the quality assurance/quality control department with data analysis, statistical process control (SPC) data collection/preparation, and act as a liaison between the commercial business
Health, Safety, Security & Environmental (HSSE) Responsibilities
  • Understand and support implementation of the site’s Operating Policy, as well as HSSE goals and objectives
  • Support and actively participate in ongoing HSSE improvement initiatives and committees
  • Maintain awareness of potential health, safety, security, and environmental impacts within your area of responsibility, including consequences of process upsets or incidents
  • Understand and implement applicable requirements of the Battleground Environmental Compliance Plan and Waste Management Plan
  • Participate in the site’s ongoing Pollution Prevention Program
  • Comply with and support all applicable government regulations related to process safety and environmental compliance
  • The Battleground site operates under OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements; understand and assist in maintaining process safety information as required by your role
  • Maintain a strong understanding of process safety principles and PSM management, including OSHA’s 14 Process Safety Management elements and Nouryon’s 21 Process Safety Building Blocks
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering
  • 6+ years of experience working in a chemical plant or manufacturing facility
  • Lead root cause investigation and failure analysis experience
  • Experience with process design, heat balance, and material balance
  • Experience with project management and implementation
  • Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles and tools (e.g., 6 sigma)
  • Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Physical ability to wear respirator, steel‑toed shoes, and hard hat
Great if you have
  • Experience with statistical analysis software (JMP, Minitab, etc.) – preferred
  • ISO 9001 & RC/ISO 14001 management systems experience – preferred
