Job summary

Corning’s Optical Fiber & Cable division seeks a Process Engineer to provide technical support for chemical technology and facility systems in Concord, NC. This hands-on, early-career role focuses on data-driven problem solving in a fast-paced outdoor manufacturing environment.

Required are a Bachelor's in Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics, 1+ years in manufacturing, and strong Excel/Access; preferred are a Master's degree, CMMS such as Maximo, SQL, PI ProcessBook, Databricks, PowerBI, and Six

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics required.
  • 1+ years of manufacturing engineering experience.
  • Strong data analysis and Excel/Access skills.
  • Experience with experimental design and basic process engineering.
  • Project management experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide process understanding and technical support for chemical tech and facility systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve process issues through data analysis and experimentation.
  • Lead projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new introductions.
  • Analyze process metrics, identify trends, and implement response plans.
  • Support startup of new equipment and maintain docs; participate in safety training.

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Role

Corning's Optical Fiber & Cable division is seeking a Process Engineer to provide technical expertise and engineering support for chemical technology, pollution abatement, and facility systems within optical fiber manufacturing. This is a hands‑on role for an early‑career engineer who thrives on data‑driven problem solving in a fast‑paced, outdoor manufacturing environment based in Concord, NC.

Work Hours, Location and Travel Requirements

Location: Concord, NC

Hours of work/work schedule/flex‑time: ~8 hours/day 40 hours/week. This position requires off‑hours coverage on nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co‑workers.

Travel Requirements: Less than 5%

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide process understanding and technical support for chemical technology, pollution abatement, and facility systems supporting optical fiber manufacturing
  • Diagnose and resolve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with subject matter experts
  • Lead and support projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new product/process introduction
  • Analyze key process metrics, identify trends, and implement response plans
  • Support startup of new equipment and systems; develop and maintain engineering and operations documentation
  • Actively engage in plant safety initiatives and provide training to engineering and operations personnel on equipment and process changes
Experiences/Education - Required
  • Bachelors in Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics (Chemical or Mechanical preferred)
  • 1+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong data analysis and statistical skills; proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access (queries, databases)
  • Experience with experimental design
  • Strong technical fundamentals with process engineering skills
  • Project management experience
Experiences/Education - Desired
  • Masters in Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics (Chemical or Mechanical preferred)
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), such as Maximo
  • Proficiency with statistical and data tools: SQL, PI Processbook, Databricks, and/or PowerBI
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification
  • Wastewater and process water experience
  • Experience with mechanical drawings and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
  • Knowledge of manufacturing cost accounting
  • Experience presenting technical solutions and network designs to audiences ranging from field technicians to senior leadership
  • Diagnoses root cause of process and equipment issues using structured problem‑solving and experimental methods

The range for this position is $82,974.00 - $114,090.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job‑related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
