Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL seeks a Process Design Engineer III/Senior to contribute to refinery process optimization and project development, delivering designs that increase throughput and improve yields.

You will prepare PFDs, P&IDs, perform simulations, lead economic analysis, and mentor junior engineers while collaborating with operations and vendors in a safety-conscious, cost-effective environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
• Four years of process engineering experience in refining or heavy industry.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without visa sponsorship.
• Must be able to wear PPE in the refinery and physically perform all tasks in the field.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to refinery/organizational long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, yield, reliability and optimize energy and water use in process units.
• Develops process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances.
• Performs process simulations and calculations to support equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization and lead economic analysis and ROI.
• Collaborates with project engineers, operations, and external vendors to ensure alignment of design with operational needs.
• Prepares process design packages and supports HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and other safety reviews.
• Provides technical leadership during project execution, including design reviews, construction support, and commissioning.
• Stays current with industry standards and best practices to ensure high-quality, cost-effective designs.
• Serves as a mentor for less experienced engineers.

OVERVIEW

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Process Design Engineer III/Senior Process Design Engineer. This position’s primary function is to contribute to refinery/organizational process optimization and project development. This includes identifying opportunities and developing projects to increase throughput, enhance yields, improve reliability, and optimize energy or water use in process units. This position reports to the Process Optimization & Growth Manager. Relocation is approved for this position.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Minimum (Required) Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering
• Four (4) years of process engineering experience within refining or heavy industry
• Valid driver’s license
• Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
• Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery and be able to physically perform all tasks in the field

Preferred Qualifications

• Six (6) years of process engineering experience
• Two (2) years of project or process design experience

SKILLS

• Microsoft Office suite including Excel
• Petrosim or similar process modelling such as MySep KG Tower

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS

• 1. Full In-Office: 5 days in the office per week, 8 hours per day.
• 2. Hybrid: 4 days in the office, 1 day work-from-home per week, 8 hours per day.
• 3. 9/80 Schedule: 9 hours Monday-Thursday in the office, with every other Friday off. On working Fridays, the schedule is 8 hours. Additional hours as needed for turnaround and outage support.
