Job summary

Sasol (USA) Corporation seeks a Process Control Engineer in Lake Charles, LA, to maintain and improve process control systems for safe, efficient unit operation. You will collaborate across Operations, Engineering, and Maintenance to implement advanced controls and drive continuous improvement.

The role requires a Bachelor's in engineering with 5+ years in petrochemical process control, strong DCS/PLC expertise, and practical knowledge of ABB MOD300/800xA or Emerson DeltaV .

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology plus 5+ years relevant experience.
• Associate’s degree in Electrical/Electronics/Industrial Instrumentation plus 10+ years relevant experience.
• Knowledge of batch and continuous process units within petrochemical industries.
• Experience with distributed control systems (DCS) and advanced regulatory control.
• Proficiency with PLC hardware/software and related databases.

Responsibilities

• Provide first-level operational support for unit-specific control issues.
• Collaborate with Process Engineering, Project Engineering, and I&E Maintenance to identify and implement process improvements.
• Design, recommend, and execute modifications to control strategies and systems based on operation reviews.
• Enhance utilization of control technology by training Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams.
• Act as the primary contact for process control and automation in projects focused on production, safety, and maintenance.
• Diagnose and resolve issues with process control systems and software.

Purpose of Job

Ensure the process control system remains fully operational, supporting unit processes safely and efficiently. Collaborate with operations and support teams to drive continuous improvement through advanced controls and process modifications. Operate independently to align with business objectives, maintaining uninterrupted unit performance.

Key Accountabilities

• Provide first-level operational support for unit-specific control issues.
• Collaborate with Process Engineering, Project Engineering, and I&E Maintenance to identify and implement process improvements.
• Design, recommend, and execute modifications to control strategies, and systems based on process operation reviews.
• Enhance utilization of control technology by training Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams on system functionality.
• Assess resource needs for resolving control-related challenges and determine when alternative solutions are required.
• Act as the primary contact for process control and automation in projects focused on production, safety, and maintenance.
• Diagnose and resolve issues with process control systems, including equipment malfunctions, software errors, and communication failures.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

Formal Education

• University Bachelor’s degree (engineering / technology): Chemical, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, plus 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Associate’s degree: Electrical Technology, Electronics Technology, or Industrial Instrumentation Technology, plus 10+ years of relevant experience.

Working Experience

• Knowledge of batch and continuous process units within petrochemical industries.
• Knowledge of process control systems, including advanced regulatory control.
• Proficiency in Distributed Control Systems and related databases; ABB MOD300/800xA and Emerson DeltaV preferred.
• Experience with PLC hardware and software (Triconex, Allen Bradley, Modicon).
• Experience in one or more languages (e.g., C, Visual Basic, SQL).
• Working knowledge of protocols such as Modbus, Modbus TCP, and Profibus.

• Able to work effectively both independently and within cross-functional teams, adapting to problem scope and urgency.
• Demonstrates strong leadership, partnership, and clear communication across operations, engineering, and maintenance.
• Applies advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose issues and deliver practical solutions.
• Proficient with computers and business applications, especially the Microsoft Office 365 suite.
