A Probation Officer 2 works to the best of their ability to reduce the risk of recidivism by working with youth on their caseload with the goal to encourage and invoke behavior change while working to keep the community safe. A Probation Officer II guides a youth and guardian through the probation process. They make appropriate referrals and recommendations based on the identified, individualized needs, and information gathered regarding the youth and family. They work with the family to create and fulfill a probation case plan. The Probation Officer II ensures court guidelines and probation orders are adhered to.
Has no direct supervisory responsibility for staff members.

All court-related information regarding hearings, etc. that the employee may come in contact with by working in the facility and confidential information that employee comes into contact with while working with probation clients.
This position is subject to varying and unpredictable situations; may handle emergency or crisis situations; is subject to many interruptions; may handle multiple calls and inquiries simultaneously; and may occasionally assist in covering hearings or other court meetings of co-workers and team members.
Position requires travel and visiting with clients and family members, having varying working conditions outside of the courthouse. Contact involves occasional exposure to physical injury, illness, or hazards. May occasionally have exposure to unsafe working conditions, people, or elements, and may have to take precautions when performing tasks.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, speak clearly, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Must be willing to work in varied weather conditions and long periods of time in a vehicle.
Demonstrable knowledge of adolescent growth and development, human behavior, and family dynamics. Working knowledge of brokering community resources and an understanding of the juvenile justice system. Skills in interviewing, case assessment and individual counseling. Proven and effective verbal and written communication skills and abilities. Ability to effectively communicate new concepts to youth and families. Ability to make thorough, comprehensive oral presentations in court hearings and in team and committee meetings. Ability to effectively interpret case data and refer youth and families for interventions. Ability to make use of referrals. Exhibits sound and thorough decision making skills. Maintains confidentiality. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with clients, staff, and the public. Makes use of supervision. Culturally competent. Ability to effectively manage stress. Ability to de-escalate high stress/volatile situations. Works effectively with volatile clients. Problem solves and multi-tasks. Flexible in work hours to accommodate program needs including, but not limited to, case consultation on an emergency or as needed basis 7 days/week, 24 hours/day, in person or by telephone.
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, Social Work, or a related field.
Prefers candidates with one year of work experience managing a Probation caseload, completion of a Probation internship at the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Juvenile Division, or related experience.
Must possess a valid driver's license and continuously maintain automobile insurance in compliance with state law, with a driving record acceptable to the Court's current policies. Must have ready access to a safe functioning automobile with valid registration and insurance.
Any position which requires operating a motor vehicle as an essential duty of responsibility of the position will be subject to a driving record check through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Applicants are required to provide their driver license number upon request. Applicants who possess a driver’s license from a state other an Ohio, or those applicants who have possessed an out-of-state driver’s license at any time during the five years prior to review, must provide a certified copy of his or her out-of-state driving history for at least the five years prior to the review of the applicant’s driving qualifications.
