County of Humboldt is seeking a senior probation leader to plan, organize, and direct probation and juvenile corrections programs. You will set division goals, supervise staff, and coordinate with other agencies to ensure safety and rehabilitation outcomes.
The role requires strong budget and grant experience, data-driven decision making, and a commitment to evidence-based practices within a public safety framework.
The Humboldt County Probation Department is comprised of approximately 90 employees and plays an important role in promoting public safety throughout the community. The department operates a Juvenile Hall that includes both a secure mental health treatment program and a secure track program. Through its Juvenile Services Division, the department supervises approximately 100 youth, many of whom are provided opportunities for diversion and rehabilitation. Case management is grounded in evidence-based practices designed to support positive outcomes and reduce future involvement in the justice system.
The Juvenile Services Division also supports the courts by conducting investigations and preparing reports to assist with informed decision-making. Across all of its responsibilities, the department’s primary mission is to enhance public safety through a balanced focus on rehabilitation, accountability, and community well‑being.

Under direction, plans, organizes, directs and manages the work of an adult, juvenile, or juvenile correctional facility division of the Probation Department including the delivery of all phases of Probation services; provides expert professional assistance to County staff and outside agencies in areas of responsibility, including serving on the department management team and inter‑agency coordinating teams; performs direct supervision; performs related work as assigned. Serves as a peace officer pursuant to Penal Code Section 830.5.
Positions in this class are sworn peace officers under section 830.5 of the penal code and report to the Chief Probation Officer or Assistant Chief Probation Officer. Incumbents direct and are responsible for the work of probation officers. Incumbents also have a primary duty and responsibility for counseling, supervision and custody of a group of youths assigned or committed to the hall or home. This class is distinguished from the Assistant Chief Probation Officer in that the latter is responsible for assisting in the overall departmental administration.

Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

For law enforcement positions you will be required to verify your U.S. citizenship or legalized status.
All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
