Job summary

The Hartford Probation Office in Vermont seeks a Probation and Parole Officer to coordinate program activities and directly supervise offenders, including contact with families and partners in the community. This role involves risk assessment, custody classification, and required investigations at both field and office settings.

This position is located at the Hartford Probation office . Work is performed in an office and field setting working with potentially dangerous correctional clients. Specialized professional casework providing services to offenders in a community setting. Incumbents will provide risk control and risk management services to adult offenders under the supervision of community furlough, probation or parole status. Work is performed in accordance with correctional policies, procedures, and directives.


Duties include coordinating program activities, Direct supervision to include contact with offender families, offender supports, law enforcement agencies, Courts, and community partners is required. Administer Risk instruments and make recommendations for the custody classification, Pre-sentence, Pre-parole investigations of offenders. Maintain records and prepare reports as directed.

Work is performed in a field office, correctional and community setting and includes frequent interaction with potentially dangerous correctional clients. High stress may be present, as is some danger of assault. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty required to provide necessary services and supervision. Field travel is necessary and incumbents may be required to provide private means of transportation. Work related court, community meeting, and Parole Board appearances may be anticipated.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, or higher, in criminal justice, or a closely related field.
  • High school diploma or equivalent or higher AND three (3) years or more experience in human services casework OR related fields, such as mental health/addiction counseling, residential treatment, juvenile justice, direct service legal work, emergency services, corrections, law enforcement, military service, or similar roles.
  • Note: Possession of a valid driver's license is required, and a criminal background check will be performed prior to hire. Certain convictions can be disqualifying.
