Job summary

City of Washington seeks a Police Officer to perform patrols and respond to service calls while conducting investigations and enforcing laws. The role places the officer in high-visibility situations in crime areas and requires readiness for emergencies and protective actions.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED and NC BLET certification, with a valid NC driver’s license. Preference is given to those with an associate degree or equivalent and prior law enforcement experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Basic Law Enforcement Certification (BLET) required to be continuously employed.
• Valid North Carolina driver's license with acceptable driving record.
• Preferred: Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college and prior law enforcement experience.

Responsibilities

• Patrols high and low crime areas; talks to people in the community; checks security of buildings and residences; apprehends offenders.
• Investigates traffic accidents; uses measurement devices and eye witness accounts to determine violators; assists motorists in completing insurance information.
• Maintains readiness of police vehicle with fuel and air pressure.
• Serves criminal papers; locates people under indictment; serves warrants, orders for arrest, and criminal summons.
• Observes and enforces traffic laws; enforces speed limits.
• Conducts criminal investigations by gathering information, processing crime scenes, and interviewing witnesses.
• Testifies in Court.
• Transports arrested personnel to a correctional facility.
• Provides field training and guidance in police work to less senior officers.
• Responds to domestic situations; attempts to resolve conflicts.
• Performs other related law enforcement work as required.
