Job description

Overview

Medication Technician plays an integral role in the success of the team and community. The primary purpose is to administer medications within the scope of the license and provide daily resident care and services as directed, in accordance with the established care plan.

Essential Job Functions
  • Work under the general supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Assist / administer medications according to healthcare provider instructions, following the Medication Administration Record and within the scope of the license.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of medication administration, medication effectiveness, and any noted side effects, in accordance with established policy and procedures, standards of care, and applicable state/federal regulations; report any adverse reactions or side effects to supervisor or Director of Nursing.
  • Perform personal care activities including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, skin care/nail care, oral hygiene, shaving, and other activities as directed or requested.
  • Assist in dining rooms as assigned to provide resident care and monitoring.
  • Initiate and participate in leisure activities for residents; encourage social participation and friendship development.
  • Observe and report the health and emotional condition of each resident, promptly reporting all changes to the nurse; report significant events that occur during the shift.
  • Respond promptly, courteously, and appropriately to resident requests for assistance.
  • Promote personal safety and a safe environment for residents by observing infection control, blood‑borne pathogens, fire safety, hazardous materials, and other safety practices; report unsafe situations to the nurse.
  • Assist residents in preparing for appointments and social programs.
  • Assist residents to walk with or without self‑help devices as instructed.
  • Check each resident routinely to ensure that personal care needs are met in accordance with their wishes.
  • Provide special resident services offered by the facility.
  • Provide physical support to assist patients in performing daily living activities—such as transferring, getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, standing, walking, or exercising, serving and assisting with meals, and taking vital signs.
  • Observe and document the health, behavior, physical, and emotional condition of each resident, promptly reporting all changes to the nurse.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to resident call signals, bells, or intercom systems to determine residents' needs.
  • Promote personal safety with a clean and safe environment for residents by observing infection control practices; report unsafe situations to the nurse.
  • Communicate with nurses on resident conditions, changes, and concerns.
  • Provide companionship, comfort, and support to residents.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Critical Skills
  • Make independent decisions and follow instructions.
  • Tactfully deal with personnel, prospects, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the public.
  • Capable of working with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset people within the facility.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, prospects, residents, and families.
Education & Experience
  • Meet all applicable state and federal requirements for this position.
  • Prefer at least 6 months of experience in a home care, assisted living, or long‑term care facility.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have any direct reports or supervisory requirements.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds; moving, lifting, or transferring residents may involve lifting up to seventy‑five (75) pounds.
  • Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry patients.
  • Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles over time without fatigue.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, sit, and reach.
  • Fine motor skills.
Cognitive Requirements
  • Execute tasks independently.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively verbally.
  • Ability to concentrate on moderate details with frequent interruptions.
  • Visual acuity.
  • Hearing alertness.
Environmental Requirements
  • Ambient room temperatures and lighting.
