Job summary

Ashe Memorial Hospital in West Jefferson, NC, is seeking a Medical Laboratory Professional (MT/MLT/CLS) for PRN day shifts to perform moderate- and high-complexity testing across hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, and blood bank.

You will ensure proper specimen handling, maintain QC procedures, troubleshoot discrepancies, and report results promptly while upholding safety and regulatory standards in a patient-centered environment.

Qualifications

• Certification: Eligible for or certified as one of the following: MLT, MT, or CLS
• Education: Appropriate laboratory education and training per federal/state guidelines
• Certification: CPR certification required or ability to obtain within 12 months
• Additional: Must be eligible for MLT certification within 12 months if not already certified

Responsibilities

• Perform hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, and blood bank testing
• Ensure proper specimen collection, handling, processing, and reporting
• Maintain quality control procedures and calibration of equipment
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve testing discrepancies
• Report critical values promptly and accurately per protocols
• Assist with phlebotomy as needed and maintain safety standards

Position Overview

The Medical Laboratory Professional performs a broad range of laboratory tests across multiple disciplines to support timely and accurate diagnosis. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.

Position Details

• Employment Type: PRN (as needed)
• Shift: 12-hour Day Shifts (1st shift; schedule varies)
• Department: Laboratory Services
• Travel: None required
• Supervisory Responsibilities: None
• Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Key Responsibilities

• Perform moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing in areas including:
  • Hematology and Coagulation
  • Chemistry
  • Urinalysis
  • Microbiology
  • Blood Bank
• Ensure proper specimen collection, handling, processing, and reporting
• Maintain quality control procedures, calibration, and equipment performance
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve testing discrepancies
• Report critical values promptly and accurately in accordance with protocols
• Assist with phlebotomy as needed
• Maintain compliance with safety, infection control, and regulatory standards
• Document results accurately and in a timely manner

Minimum Qualifications

• Certification: Eligible for or certified as one of the following:
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT – ASCP or AMT)
  • Medical Technologist (MT – ASCP, AMT, or HEW)
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS – NCA, ASMT, or equivalent)
• Education: Appropriate laboratory education and training in accordance with federal and state guidelines
• Certification Requirement: CPR certification required or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months
• Additional: Must be eligible for MLT certification within twelve (12) months if not already certified
