Mission Cancer + Blood, part of University of Iowa Health Care, is seeking a PRN Medical Assistant II to support our surgical oncology and cardiothoracic patient population in Des Moines, IA. The role blends administrative and clinical tasks to ensure efficient patient care.

The MA will assist in exams, manage records, administer routine medications, perform routine labs and EKGs, and support discharge planning with nursing staff. Strong communication and BLS certification are desirable.

Qualifications

  • Certification as Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized MA program.
  • Curriculum includes patient interaction, pharmacology basics, and clinical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate smooth patient flow through the clinic and coordinate with staff.
  • Assist with clinical exams, history, medications, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manage medical records for accurate patient appointments.
  • Administer routine medications as allowed for MAs.
  • Conduct routine lab tests, EKGs, and X-ray support as needed.
  • Identify vaccination needs for patient populations.
  • Handle clerical tasks: check-in, scheduling, and inquiries.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff for clinic workups and follow-ups.
  • Participate in huddles and discharge planning to ensure continuity of care.

PRN Medical Assistant II

Mission Cancer + Blood, part of University of Iowa Health Care, is seeking a PRN Medical Assistant II to support our surgical oncology and cardiothoracic patient population.

The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare professionals and ensuring the smooth operation of medical facilities. This position involves a combination of administrative and clinical tasks to provide comprehensive patient care.

Duties to include
  • Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manage internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment.(These are medications that can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.)
  • Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work, does electrocardiograms and x-ray work as needed.
  • Identify vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Perform related clerical tasks including checking patients in for their visit, answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing information to other departments.
  • Partner with nursing staff to ensure timely, thorough clinic work up and follow up including calls to patients (post procedure, normal test results, fasting, appointment reminders, etc.), preparation of patient education materials and packets, monitoring of fax machine and distribution of faxes, obtain outside records/labs, and obtain pre-authorization.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Technicians across clinic/specialty to ensure optimal patient experience and efficient clinic flow.
  • Participate in huddles to address issues and plan upcoming clinics.
  • Demonstrate accountability for patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in discharge planning process to ensure continuity of care and appropriate identification of primary provider.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant program; OR
  • Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program (including but not limited to): pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology, and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
Special Qualification Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University Fleet Safety Program requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience providing direct patient care in, or demonstrated knowledge of, cardiovascular services.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
