Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston is seeking Histology Technologists to prepare and process tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist. You will perform accessioning, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining, and may assist with frozen sections.

The Histotechnician ensures compliance with JCAHO, DHEC, CLIA and CAP standards, requires an ASCP HT certification and an associate degree with biology and chemistry, and at least one year of clinical

Histology Technologists or Histology Techs are responsible for handling all processes in preparation of pathology specimens and slides. Each histologist must ensure quality assessment for patient care at all times by producing quality microtomy sections, accuracy of staining performance while troubleshooting, and maintaining a clear understanding of laboratory maintenance and safety.

Job Description

Prepares and processes tissue samples for routine histologic techniques to be examined under a microscope by a pathologist. The histologic techniques include accessioning, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining of human tissue for evaluation. The histotech may be asked to help with frozen sectioning. The Histotechnician (HT) assures laboratories compliance in meeting the standards set forth by JCAHO, DHEC, CLIA and College of American Pathologist (CAP).

Education

Associates degree from an accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).

Experience

At least 1 year of clinical laboratory work experience required.

Credentials

HT(ASCP) certification by American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) or equivalent. Associates degree from an accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).

Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception.
