Certified Nurse Aide Overview

The Certified Nurse Aide provides personal care and related services. She/he functions in a supportive relationship to professional disciplines and may function as an extension of these professional services with appropriate supervision and specialized hospice training. He/she works under the direction, instruction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or appropriate supervisor. Tasks of the Certified Nurse Aide will be assigned by and performed under the direct supervision of an RN who will be responsible for the patient care to be provided by the Home Health. The Certified Nurse Aide needs empathetic communication skills, be flexible, and have respect for the patient’s privacy and property. A positive attitude is a must, dependable techniques in personal hygiene, good observation skills, reliability, and an understanding of the team concept.

Responsibilities
  1. Observe, report, and document patient status and care promptly
  2. Maintain clean, safe environment including changing bed, bath, and linens
  3. Read and record temperature, pulse, and respiration
  4. Perform safe transfer techniques
  5. Perform normal range of motion and positioning
  6. Assist with safe ambulation
  7. Assist in healthy meal preparation
  8. Assist patients to self-administer medications
  9. Perform appropriate and safe techniques in personal hygiene and grooming (for example shaving, shampooing, and oral hygiene)
  10. Light housekeeping
  11. Understand what occurs during the initial referral, case opening, initiation of the interdisciplinary plan of care, role of each team member in the home, and bereavement process
  12. Recognize emergencies and appropriate response in an emergency
  13. Report changes in the patient’s condition and needs
  14. Maintain skin integrity, i.e., simple dressings, decubitus ulcer care
  15. Infection control
  16. Philosophy and mission of the organization and the role of the health team
  17. Safety measures in the home (oxygen safety, safety during seizures, environmental safety)
  18. Documentation on appropriate records
  19. Notify the agency of absences due to illness, emergency leave, normal vacation periods, or special professional meetings which will affect agreed service with the agency
  20. Perform other related tasks as specified by organizational policy
Qualifications & Job Requirements
  • Spanish Bilingual preferred
  • Prefer 1-2 years of health care experience
  • Leadership skills (ability to take charge; set objectives; drive to results; team player)
  • Skillful in organization of work and in principles of time management
  • Ability to contribute to the quality of care being rendered through constructive communication with primary care staff
  • Good communication skills and ability to establish good rapport with other staff members
  • Demonstrated ability to work with patients and employees
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a proactively diverse and inclusive organization
  • Must have excellent written communication by writing clearly and informatively and edits work; demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness and follows through on commitments
  • Must practice a high level of confidentiality and be able to effectively respond to questions from employees, managers and outside entities
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Must be able to work with others to resolve issues and maintain composure in an environment of changing priorities
  • Must have knowledge of all company policies and procedures
  • Must be able to work on a timetable, follow instructions, respond to management direction and solicit feedback to improve performance
  • Should have excellent character references and solid work background
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English. Spanish is preferred
  • Must have knowledge and proficiency of office computer equipment and software
  • Demonstrate ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced office setting
  • Proven ability to cope with conflict, stress and crisis situations
Driving & Other Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid state driver license, have a registered and reliable vehicle that meets state law standards, and meets the insurance standards of company. Position requires travel between company sites as well as the community.
