Job summary

40 National Emergency Management and Response is seeking a seasoned commercial driver to support national emergency operations. The role requires completion of a CDL training program and a minimum of five years holding a valid CDL license, plus at least 36 months of verifiable commercial driving experience.

A Passenger (P) endorsement is preferred. Applicants must meet rigorous safety standards, pass background checks, and be prepared for deployment in emergency contexts, including long shifts

Responsibilities

  • Understand and adhere to the National EMR Policies and Procedures Manual, Uniform Handbook, and Operations Manual.
  • Foster a culture that encourages team members to work safely, identify potential hazards, and report safety concerns.
  • Maintain alertness to ensure personal and team safety in all conditions and communicate concerns.
  • Maintain active status within the agency’s platforms, including learning management systems for training.
  • Participate in, assist, or supervise an incident management workforce for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • Be receptive to serve in a position during critical circumstances with obstacles or challenges.
  • Solve day-to-day operational issues and reach short-term performance goals.
  • Support survivors and communities during disasters by being ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
  • Maintain readiness to deploy within 6–12 hours of activation.
  • Update upcoming availability within the National EMR’s mobile app by the 27th monthly.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must pass scheduled or spontaneous drug screening/background check.
  • Able to lift more than 50 pounds regularly.
  • Work extended hours and field/austere conditions.

Job Overview

Experience: Req: A minimum of five years holding a valid CDL license and a minimum of 36 months verifiable experience in commercial driving is required. Passenger (P) endorsement is preferred.

Responsibilities and Duties
  1. Understand and adhere to the National EMR Policies and Procedures Manual, Uniform Handbook, and Operations Manual.
  2. Foster a culture that encourages team members to work safely, identify potential hazards, and report safety concerns immediately to their direct chain of command.
  3. Maintain constant state of alertness to ensure personal and team safety in all conditions and communicate concerns immediately.
  4. Maintain active status within the agency’s platforms, including learning management systems to complete training that may be directed toward self-improvement, mission‑specifics, or Just‑In‑Time (JIT) training.
  5. Participate in, assist, or supervise an incident management workforce that will conduct disaster preparedness, response, and recovery initiatives as needed.
  6. Be receptive and flexible to serve in a position when responding to critical circumstances which may have obstacles and/or challenges that need to be overcome.
  7. Be able to solve day‑to‑day operational issues and reach short‑term performance goals.
  8. Support survivors and communities during disasters by being readily available to assist at a moment’s notice.
  9. Maintain personal readiness to deploy within 6‑12 hours of activation.
  10. Update upcoming availability within the National EMR’s mobile application by the 27th of each month to respond when needed.
  11. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  1. Adhere to acceptable standards of professional integrity and accountability in the workplace, and comply with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations in all duties.
  2. Provide proof of valid driver’s license and driving record in good standing for a minimum of five years with no restrictions (subject to review annually) and no more than two moving violations or accidents.
  3. Capability to obtain and sustain a non‑exempt DOT Medical Card and to manage DOT Qualification File by producing required documents immediately upon request.
  4. Proficiency in operating heavy equipment for loading and unloading in diverse terrains at job sites.
  5. Participation in setting up and dismantling deployment sites including but not limited to shelters, mobile command platforms, and base camps.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to:
    1. Respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio‑economic characteristics.
    2. Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers, professionals, and clients.
    3. Maintain professional people skills and non‑verbal communication skills.
    4. Communicate effectively, verbally and in written form, in English.
    5. Work in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining control and professional composure and making decisions based on the needs of the program and service population.
    6. Be detail oriented and organized.
    7. Work effectively and without intensive supervision both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
    8. Utilize a variety of communication systems to provide situational awareness across the response (cellular, two‑way radio, satellite, etc.).
    9. Perform physical activity such as extensive walking, stretching, bending, and occasionally lifting and/or exceeding 50 lbs.
    10. Work extended hours and/or non‑traditional hours (weekends, evenings, holidays)
    11. Work in field/austere conditions (lodging in tents, campers, RVs, etc.)
  7. Must successfully pass a scheduled or spontaneous drug screening/background check.
  8. Able to lift, push, pull, or carry more than 50 pounds regularly.
  9. Ability to bend and lift without difficulty.
  10. Support full team operations by supporting when needed to load, unload, and set up truck(s) and equipment.
