Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to lead lessons for youth participants, ensuring safety and positive engagement in a structured aquatic program. You will coordinate with parents, maintain records, and uphold YMCA policies during lessons.

Ideal candidates hold YMCA Swim Instructor Certification and current CPR/First Aid. This role emphasizes safety, skill development, and fostering a supportive learning environment for children in a community-focused setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 16 and at least 5 years older than the oldest youth participant.
  • Demonstrate Swim Instructor skills per YMCA standards.
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor Certification and listed safety trainings.
  • ASHI CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, and YOTS Child Abuse Training.
  • Ability to relate to diverse groups.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Know and follow emergency procedures per YMCA standards.
  • Maintain all required certifications.
  • Conduct swim lessons for 1–2 participants; coordinate with parents for scheduling.
  • Develop swimming and water safety skills using structured teaching methods.
  • Provide feedback to students and celebrate progress.
  • Engage with parents before/after lessons and address concerns.
  • Keep attendance and progress records as required.
  • Prepare and organize equipment for classes and return after use.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • May conduct stroke development clinics or other aquatics programs.
  • Report suspicious behavior and policy violations.

Description
Position Summary:

Provides leadership, instruction and motivation for participants in swimming lessons. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Knows and understands all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately and appropriately, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
  • Maintains all required certifications, in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
  • Conducts swim lessons for one to two participants in accordance with YMCA standards, policies and procedures. Coordinates with parents to schedule a mutually agreed upon time for lessons.
  • Develops swimming and water safety skills using effective organizational patterns, observation, instructional floatation devices and teaching techniques, adjusting for each participant’s developmental needs.
  • Creates a positive student experience by providing effective feedback, celebrating success, and encouraging progress.
  • Creates a positive parent experience by interacting before and after each lesson, giving constructive feedback and giving opportunities for at home learning. Address parent concerns and communicate with aquatics leadership.
  • Maintains accurate records of attendance and progress, as required by YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
  • Performs daily equipment checks and reports damaged equipment. Prepare equipment prior to class start based on lesson plans. Organizes and puts away all equipment after use.
  • Attends all staff meetings and trainings, as required by YMCA standards, policies and procedures.
  • May be required to conduct stroke development clinics, or other aquatics programs as needed.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
  • Meets timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets.

A swim assessment will be conducted during the interview process. All candidates must show proficiency in four of the six strokes to be considered.

Qualifications:

  • Current /or must obtain prior to first scheduled instructional shift: YMCA Swim Instructor Certification.ASHI certification for: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen and YOTS Child Abuse Prevention Training, Information Security and Awareness, Workplace Harassment and Bullying, Universal Precautions, and New Staff Orientation Assessment.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Language Skills:

Ability to read, interpret, retain and teach safety rules, maintenance instructions and aquatics education manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, members and other staff, as well as one-on-one situations.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense, understanding and sound judgment to carry out instructions in written, verbal or diagram form, including assisting with curriculum learning. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to be sensitive and alert to the needs feeling and safety of others. Ability to follow YMCA policies and procedures and state health department code requirements.

Ability to hear voices, distinguish distress signals and communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in both normal and loud situations.
